    • A seat assembly having a tunable tie bar is provided and includes a main pivot and a housing operably supporting the tie bar. The housing is fixedly attached to a seatback of the seat assembly and includes C-shaped members fixedly joined together to provide a space in which the tie bar is disposed. The tie bar is fixedly attached to the housing and is in engagement with the main pivot, whereby the tie bar reacts against the main pivot to provide the seatback with sufficient support. The tie bar serves to strengthen the housing and ultimately provide the seatback with sufficient strength to support an occupant and the accompanying seatbelt loads associated with a seat-mounted retractor assembly. The tie bar is tunable between different seating applications and as such, allows the housing to be used in various seating applications and does not require extensive design and tooling for each application.

    • The invention relates to a vehicle seat which protects a passenger against the consequences of a rear-end collision, particularly against whiplash. Such a vehicle seat is provided with a seat part (2), an upright seat back (3) connected thereto and means for limiting a jerking movement of the seat back (3) under load. These jerk limiting means can be formed in that the seat back (3) has a rigidity which is variable in height direction. The rigidity of the seat back (3) in the vicinity of the seat part (2) is herein smaller than further from the seat part (2). The less rigid part can be movable, for instance pivotable, relative to the seat part. The jerk limiting means can also be formed in that the seat back (3) is pivotable on an axis located at a distance above the seat part (2). In both cases means can be present for fixing the pivotable parts in their rest position. There can also be means for damping the movement of these parts. These fixation and/or damping means can be adjustable, whereby the degree of damping can be adapted to the mass of the user. The invention also relates to a seat back and to fixation and/or damping means for application in a seat as described above.

    • A vehicle seat assembly (10) includes a seat bottom (12) and a seat back (14) supported for pivotal movement relative to the seat bottom to allow adjustment of the seat back between a variety of reclined positions. The seat includes a power adjustment mechanism (16) that pivots the seat back with respect to the seat bottom. The adjustment mechanism includes a threaded shaft (36) pivotally supported at one end such that the shaft moves with the seat back as the seat back pivots with respect to the seat bottom. A gearbox assembly (38) is mounted to the seat back and includes a housing (56) that substantially encloses a gear (42) and drive nut (44) assembly. The threaded shaft defines a longitudinal axis along which the gearbox assembly moves as the seat pivots. An electric motor (40) is used to drive the gear and drive nut assembly along the threaded shaft causing the seat back to pivot relative to the seat bottom. A pair of thrust bearings are mounted on opposite sides of the gear and drive nut assembly, and a spacer is used to properly locate the bearings within the housing. The housing is electromagnetically formed around the spacer to fix the spacer with respect to the housing and to eliminate free play along the longitudinal axis.
