    • A drier apparatus for removing water or other liquids from various materials includes a mixer, drying chamber, separator and regenerator and a method for use of the apparatus. The material to be dried is mixed with a heated media to form a mixture which then passes through the chamber. While passing through the chamber, a comparatively cool fluid is passed counter current through the mixture so that the mixture becomes cooler and drier and the fluid becomes hotter and more saturated with moisture. The mixture is then separated into drier material and media. The media is transferred to the regenerator and heated therein by the hot fluid from the chamber and supplemental heat is supplied to bring the media to a preselected temperature for mixing with the incoming material to be dried. In a closed loop embodiment of the apparatus, the fluid is also recycled from the regenerator to the chamber and a chiller is utilized to reduce the temperature of the fluid to a preselected temperature and dew point temperature.

    • According to one aspect of the present invention, a dual stage filtration apparatus includes a cartridge having a first end and an opposing second end and a first filtration stage including a first bundle of first semi-permeable filtering elements and a second filtration stage including a second bundle of second semi-permeable filtering elements. The cartridge has a fluid inlet port for receiving raw unfiltered fluid into the first filtration stage and a fluid outlet port for discharging purified fluid after it has passed through the first and second filtration stages. The apparatus has an intrastage space that receives fluid that has been filtered in the first filtration stage prior to being filtered again in the second filtration stage, and the fluid inlet port is in fluid communication only with the first filtration stage, while the fluid outlet port is in fluid communication only with the second filtration stage. According to one aspect of the present invention, both ends of the first semi-permeable filtering elements are disposed and open at the first end and both ends of the second semi-permeable filtering elements are disposed and open at the second end.

    • An improved veneer dryer and method for enhancing the performance of a veneer dryer. The veneer dryer includes at least one drying chamber (38) that includes conveyor for conveying product to be dried between an input end and an output end. A plurality of upper (54) and lower (52) nozzles are arranged above and below the conveyor and are operative to direct heated air (44) into an impinging contact with material being conveyed on the conveyor. The nozzles are arranged in pairs wherein one nozzle of a pair includes a plurality of discharge ports that are offset with respect to a plurality of discharge ports forming part of the other nozzle of the pair. The nozzles are preferably tapered in a longitudinal direction, such that the ratio of a cross section of an inlet end of the nozzle and the cross section of a terminal end of the nozzle is equal to or less than 7.5625 and greater than 5.04. The nozzles are arranged in pairs both in a lateral direction and a vertical direction. The extent to which the discharge ports of one nozzle are offset with respect to the discharge ports of the other nozzle is less than the lateral distance of adjacent discharge ports on a given nozzle.

    • A vapor collection method and apparatus capable of capturing vapor compositions without substantial dilution. The method and apparatus utilize a material (12) that has a surface (14) with an adjacent gas phase. A chamber (16) is positioned in close proximity to a surface (14) of the material (12). The position of the chamber (16) creates a relatively small gap (H) between the surface of the material (14) and the chamber (16). The adjacent gas phase between the chamber and the surface define a region possessing an amount of mass. At least a portion of the mass is drawn through the region by induced flow. The utilization of a small gap (H) limits the flow of mass that is external to the chamber (16) from being swept through the chamber by induced flow.
