    • An emergency anchor release system (70) comprises a release (mechanism 12) for releasing an emergency anchor (74) when it is activated so that the anchor (74) falls into the water under the force of gravity. The system (70) includes an electronically operated activating means (76) mechanically coupled to the release mechanism (72) for activating the release (mechanism 72) upon receipt of an activation signal. A remotely operated control (means 18) is also provided, for sending an activation signal to the activating (means 76) in the event of an emergency so that the emergency anchor (74) can be remotely released.

    • An elongate anchor arm is rotatably secured to the side of a boat so that the arm may be rotated down from the floating boat and locked into engagement with the water bottom. An anchoring and/or orienting effect is achieved by rotating and locking the arm such that a portion of the side of the arm is forced into and held against the water bottom. For anchoring in water deeper than the length of the anchor arm, one end of a flexible anchor line is secured to a conventional line- deployed anchor and the other line end is attached to the far end of the anchor arm. The arm is rotated to achieve the anchoring and/or orienting effect of attaching the anchor line at different points on the boat.

    • A method for measuring the tensile force in a studless chain (6), such as an anchor chain for a floating offshore structure, wherein a link (7) of the chain is held securely in a chain stopper (10) in a jack winch while a chain link (11) above is lowered by means of the lifting device (14) of the jack winch so that an opening is created between the upper bend (18) of the link (7) held securely and the lower bend (15) of the link (11) above. Next, a load measuring device (1) comprising a compression load cell (2) is inserted into the opening, whereupon the lifting device (14) tensions the chain so that the force measuring device (1) is jammed in place between said bends (18, 15) and takes up the entire tensile force (F) during further raising of the lifting device (14). The tensile force may be read in a portable device (17) connected to the load cell (2). The tensile force may also be read during the following lowering of the lifting device (14) in order to release the force measuring device (1).     • Methods for installation, connection to, and use of anchors for mooring of marine structures, especially although not exclusively for gravity installed anchors, and accompanying apparatus. One embodiment comprises an anchor having recovery and load lines attached thereto, both lines held by a trailing buoy and with subsea connectors at their upper ends, held up by the buoy. The trailing buoy is held in a release frame, the anchor is lowered to a desired height above a seabed, then the release mechanism is shifted and the anchor is permitted to free fall and penetrate into the seabed. The trailing buoy and subsea connectors remain above the seabed, and a mooring line from a structure can be connected to the load line via the subsea connector. A second embodiment comprises a launch frame attached to the lowering line. A length of chain or rope is looped from the base of the launch frame to a remote release near the end of the launch frame arm, and from there to a recovery line assembly connected to the anchor. A load line assembly is also connected to the anchor. Once the anchor is lowered to a desired height, the remote release is actuated, and the anchor plunges downward into the seabed. Subsea connectors on both the recovery line assembly and the load line assembly permit attachment and detachment of the lowering line and the mooring line. The apparatus and method of this invention requires only a single vessel and a single deployment line.
