    • Aspects of the subject matter described herein relate to using wireless identification tags (e.g., RFID tags) with backup media. In aspects, a wireless identification tag may be attached to, incorporated into, or otherwise associated with backup media, a container holding the backup media, or a location (e.g., a shelf) associated with the backup media. In response to a signal, this wireless identification tag may provide an identifier that uniquely identifies the wireless identification tag. This identifier may be associated with a data set that is stored or to be stored on the backup media. The wireless identification tag may be used to locate the backup media and to identify what is on particular backup media. In some embodiments, the wireless identification tag may store backup information thereon that may be subsequently retrieved and used identify what is on its associated backup media.

    • A system and method of error recovery for backup applications that utilizes error recovery logic provided in the storage controller itself are provided. With the system and method, error recoverylogic is provided in the storage controller for generating and maintaining error recoverylogs for one or more backup operations of one or more backup applications running on one or more host systems. The backup applications may utilize an established set of commands/API function calls to invoke the error recovery logic on the storage controller. At the initiation of the backup operation, the storage controller assigns a unique identifier to the backup operation and returns this identifier to the backup application. The backup application may then use this identifier to initiate error recovery operations or commit changes made during the backup operation via the storage controller. Thus, the storage controller offloads the burden of error recoveryfrom the backup applications.

    • A method and system for backing up and restoring data of virtual machines. A virtual machine may be discovered through a directory service or via an agent that is installed on the virtual machine's host operating system. If the agent is installed on the virtual machine, the agent monitors changes to protected virtual machine volumes. If the agent is installed on the host, the agent monitors changes to the protected volumes, which may contain one or more virtual servers on the host. Periodically, these changes from the host or the virtual server are sent to a data protection server. The data protection server updates its replicas of protected volumes with the sent changes. Versions of files on a data protection server corresponding to a volume of a virtual server may be restored to the virtual machine, to another machine, or may be viewed from the data protection server.
