摘要： A brush, such as a toothbrush, has a brushing head (1) incorporating one or more rotatable brush inserts (2). The brushing head (1) and the inserts (2) both have a plurality of bristles (4, 32, 33, 34, 35) of various forms extending therefrom, the bristles of the inserts (2) being surrounded by the bristles of the brushing head (1). The inserts (2) are retained in sockets within the brushing head (1), within which they may both rotate and move translationally, preferably undergoing an orbital motion around the socket. The inserts (2) may move continuously or reciprocally. This motion of the inserts (2) is generated by manual movement of the brush, for example while brushing a user's teeth. The inserts (2) may be provided with toothed cogs (10) that engage with recesses (6) or gaps (6) between teeth arrayed around an interior of each socket. More complex gear arrangements are also envisaged. In one variant, the brush includes an electric motor (36) powering a mechanism to vibrate the brushing head (1) as a whole; however, this motor (36) still does not drive the inserts (2).

摘要： A hand powered rotatable toothbrush is characterized by elements, such as tufts of brush bristles (26), positionally fixed to the brush head to frictionally engage tooth surfaces and thereby positionally stabilize the brush head so that a distal portion of the brush handle (10) can be longitudinally reciprocated relative to the brush head. One or more rotatable brush members (30) mounted on the brush head are operatively connected to the distal handle portion (12), as by a rack (14) and pinion (32), to cause the brush members (30) to be rotated in response to longitudinal handle reciprocation. In one embodiment the rotatable brush member (30) cyclically rotates in opposite directions in response to back and forth linear motion of the handle (10). In another embodiment the rotation of the brush member (130) is in the same direction, irrespective of the direction in which the handle (111) moves.
