    • The invention relates to a system for digital communication of data divided into packets between at least two communication apparatuses via a network, said network comprising at least two media, wherein communication in the network is controlled by a network protocol and communication between the apparatuses is controlled by an apparatus protocol. Unabbreviated and complete transfer through the network of data and apparatus protocol information supplemented with network protocol information results in unnecessarily bulky packets, since at least some of the functions of the apparatus protocol are likewise executed by the network protocol, wherein the cost of the transfer through the network is directly proportional to the number of packets for transfer and the size of these packets. The invention has for its object to obviate the above stated drawbacks and provides to this end a system which is distinguished in that between the network and at least one of the apparatuses is placed a gate device which is adapted to code or decode the apparatus protocol information contained in a packet together with the data for transfer and to add network protocol information to the packet or remove it therefrom, and the system is further distinguished in that the gate device is adapted to transmit to an apparatus a confirmation to acknowledge receipt of a packet transmitted by this apparatus and to transfer the packet to the network for further transmission to the destination apparatus.

    • Known in a digital communication system (1) are phase recovery methods for QPSK modulated signals. It is proposed to extend such methods to multi-resolution QAM signals, which can be represented by rotationally invariant signal constellations. To this end, with each received symbol (ri), a phase reference (oi) for a high priority-bit (HP-bits) constellation is determined, and with respect to this phase reference (oi), a sub-constellation (CLx) for low-priority bits (LP-bits) is construced, the sub-constellation (CLx) being rotationally invariant. The sub-configuration (CLx) is translated to an origin (O) of the signal constellation, and then the low priority-bits (LP-bits) are determined by determining a minimum squared Euclidean distance (Ed) of the rotated and translated received symbol (bi') with respect to the rotated and translated sub-constellation. For a 2R(2,2)-QAM signal constellation a simple detection method is thus provided. The method can be made adaptive, and can also be made recursive for more complicated signal constellations such as a 64-QAM signal constellation.

Next, a message is broadcast to the plurality of network elements to activate the new configuration and deactivate the old configuration. The activation of the new connection information stored by the plurality of network elements occurs substantially simultaneously.

    • A copy protection system and method protect web sites and other works in computer readable form from unauthorized access and/or reproduction. In particular, the copy protection system examines a web site or other work in computer readable form to ascertain the web site structure and individual web site components. A web site owner selects identified web site components for protection and provides a protection level for those components. An end-user attempting to access protected web site components is directed to obtain a license wherein the copy protection system displays licensing terms to the end-user and administers a test relating to the licensing terms. Upon passing the test, the copy protection system grants the end-user a license and enables the end-user to download software that facilitates access and/or reproduction of the protected web site components. If the end-user does not obtain a license, the copy protection system permits the end-user to access and/or reproduce only unprotected web site components.
