    • A virtual speaker demonstration system is disclosed that permits a retail outlet to use a reference speaker to demonstrate the performance of multiple different demonstration speakers. An user interface permits a user to select a demonstration speaker (510, 520) and signal processing is performed so that the output from the reference speaker simulates the output of the selected demonstration speaker. The invention provides benefits to the consumer, the retailer, and the manufacturer. The consumer can listen to and compare multiple demonstration speakers easily and conveniently from the same reference speaker, the retailer uses a single (or few) reference speaker to demonstrate the performance of multiple demonstration speakers, saving costs and space. The manufacturer to be able to display and demonstrate to consumers a broader range of the manufacturer's product line.

    • Data transmission apparatus includes optical transmitters (14a, 14b) coupled to an optical link (10). A FEC coder (40) is coupled to the input of transmitter (14b'). A first signal (12a) having a first rate is provided to the first transmitter, and a second signal (12b) having a higher information rate than the first signal, while simultaneously enabling the respective output power levels of the amplifiers (18a, 18b). The transmission apparatus achieves higher transmission capacity while retaining compatibility with pre-existing fiber spans and amplifier nodes. An optical transmission system incorporates a transmitter (70) and a receiver (72) having certain transmission characteristics, such as output power level, decision threshold level, etc., that are adjustable in response to BER. A BER estimator (74) is provided at the receiving end of the link. The estimator estimates the BER of the received signal, and provides BER to the receiver, and/or transmitter, and/or optical link, based on the estimated BER, to optimize performance.

A first signal to noise ratio (SNR) is estimated (302) for a signal transmitted across the loop.     • A wiring apparatus for reducing electromagnetic interference between conductive wires is provided. Wire pairs are incorporated into rigid or flexible printed circuits to precisely control loop alignment and phase differences. This precise alignment helps to cancel radiated electromagnetic fields and reduce voltage polarities induced in nearby wires. In one embodiment, a pair of parallel wires is aligned parallel to a second, twisted pair of wires. In another embodiment, two twisted pairs of wires, with identical loop lengths, are aligned parallel to each other and offset by exactly one half loop length. In a third embodiment, two twisted pairs of wires are aligned parallel to each other, in which one pair has a loop length that is an integer ratio of the other pair.
