    • A single fiber transceiver is for use in a node of a single fiber network. The transceiver repeats signals received from one node to the next node. The node may have a processor, such as a sensor or controller, connected to the transceiver for receiving signals from the network or transmitting signals onto the network. The transceiver has a receiver and associated receive data path logic and has a transmitter and associated transmission data path logic. It also has a jam detection circuit, a pulse width compensation circuit, a phase locked loop, a weak link detection circuit and an anti-recirculation timer. The jam detection circuit cuts off nodes that transmit overly long packets to prevent the remainder of the network from becoming jammed. Before a received pulse is repeated, the pulse width compensation circuit reconstitutes each data pulse from the leading edge of the pulse in order to limit degradation of the signal as it is transmitted about the network. The phase locked loop brings the received pulse closer to phase with the local clock to limit the effect of jitter on the pulse. The weak link detector detects a decrease in the received amplitude of serial data, a measure of the integrity of the fiber link. The anti-recirculation timer prevents recirculation of pulses that have already been transmitted around the network by locking out repetition of received signals for a given period after an end of packet code.

    • An optical network is provided comprising a first node (503) and a channel drop add device (501). The first node (503) is configured to transmit data onto an optical fiber in a first line direction. The channel drop add device (501) is adapted to receive and add channels onto the optical fiber (502) thereby transmitting the data into the first and a second line direction (502a, 502b). The network further comprises a second node (507) configured to form a transmitter/receiver function. The second node is configured to receive data on said optical fiber from said first and second line directions, wherein the second node is adapted to convey data to a client interface for the data received for either said first or second line direction. The second node (507) is further configurable to transmit data into the first and second directions towards the channel add drop device using two line interfaces. The second node (507) is configured to convey data from the client interface into one direction, the active line direction, selected from said first and second directions (502a, 502b) and the second node is configured to not convey data from the client interface into the other line direction, standby line direction, selected from said first and second directions. Further, the second node (507) is adapted to synchronize received data from said first and second line directions by delaying (D) the data signals seeing the shortest delay, by a delay device.

    • For a WDM ring network, a node has an optical add drop part (60, 62, 64) and a transponder having a wavelength tunable transmitter (20) for sending a selectable one of the wavelengths in a selectable direction around the ring to a destination node. There is a controller (30) configured to select the wavelength to be sent by the wavelength tunable transmitter and to change the direction of sending around the ring, in response to a detection of a fault in sending in one of the directions. By making the transponder colourless and yet able to select direction, a simple protection switching capability can be added to an existing low cost WDM ring network having passive optical filters. This can be achieved without the need for a reconfigurable optical add drop multiplexer and associated control plane.
