    • A device (a silencer) for silencing a flow of gas, such as an exhaust gas, comprises at least one acoustic chamber (1, 2, 3) through-flowed by gas, at least one inlet pipe (6) for leading gas into the device and at least one pipe or passage (4, 12, 13) interconnecting two chambers or a chamber and an exterior environment or chamber and is designed with such features, including such cross-sectional area transitions between pipes or passages (4, 6, 12, 13) and the chambers (1, 2, 3) that the sound attenuation achieved by the device is high while the pressure drop across the silencer is low and that high attenuation at low characteristic frequencies of flow systems comprising the device are obtained. One or more diffusers (10a, 12a, 13a) for diffusing at least part of the gas flow, e.g., at the inlet to the chambers may be comprised in the device. One or more monolithic bodies or catalysers may be comprised in the device. Devices with curved or helical passages (Fig. 5) allowing a low natural frequency and embodiments having resonance chambers (Fig. 10a, b) attenuating at selected frequencies are disclosed. The device may be used for vehicles, including ships or boats and for stationary installations, such as power plants or stationary engines. A method for designing and/or dimensioning the device for a given desired sound attenuation over a given frequency spectrum at given spatial restrictions is disclosed.

    • The invention relates to a catalyst (1) in a housing (3) for an exhaust gas system of an internal combustion engine, in particular of a small-power motor, in which the catalyst (1) has at least one structured sheet metal (2) comprising a catalytically active material, said sheet metal being undulated, having channels through which the exhaust gas can flow, and being located at least partially on the housing (3). The invention is characterized in that the structure of the sheet metal (2) is such that, when seen from a cross-section of the housing (3), a cross-sectional area framed by closed channels (5) forms at least half the total cross-section of the housing (3), while the catalyst (1) has at most two layers (11). The invention further relates to a method for the production of a catalyst support body which is fitted in an exhaust system of an internal combustion engine, in particular in a sound absorber of a small-power motor. This method is characterized in that a structured sheet metal is wound obliquely around an at least partially curved, oblong body; at least part of the oblong body having the wound sheet metal is then cut into several sections; and each section forms a catalyst support body.

    • An exhaust purification apparatus comprising an expansion pipe and a thin catalyst in the exhaust system of an internal combustion engine. Two openings for discharging an exhaust gas are formed in the peripheral wall of the expansion pipe at the end thereof on the upstream side in its longitudinal direction, and center portions of gas-permeable thin catalyst in their transverse direction are disposed separately round the expansion pipe in such a manner as to oppose the openings for the exhaust gas. Both side portions of the thin catalyst are curved towards the expansion pipe and are welded integrally to the outer peripheral surface. The outer periphery of the thin catalyst is sealed by a thin sealing plate as a seal member, and an opening is formed in the sealing plate on the opposite side to the openings for the exhaust gas of the expansion pipe. A communication pipe whose upper end is fitted into the opening of the thin sealing plate penetrates through an opening of a muffler casing which is disposed substantially adjacent to, and in parallel with, the expansion pipe. The lower end of the communication pipe has a U-shaped section which is open towards the downstream side of the muffler casing. According to this construction, the exhaust gas can come into contact with the thin catalyst without being cooled by the expansion pipe or affected by the catalytic reaction heat. Therefore, a purification ratio and scavenging efficiency can be improved, and the size of the purification apparatus can be reduced.
