    • A power tong system (10) is used to make up and break out threaded pipe connections. Rotary power tongs (15) are connected to an integral backup tong (25) through an extendable hydraulic cylinder and rod (30, 31). A brake (19) is secured to the rotary tong (15) to selectively hold the pipe stationary relative to the rotary tong. When rotation of the pipe by the rotary tong (15) ceases, the brake (19) is applied, and the cylinder and rod (30, 31) are actuated to angularly displace to power tong (15) and the backup tong (25) to apply a torque force to the pipe connection disposed between the power tong (15) and the backup tong (25). A resulting torque force is obtained that is greater than the maximum torque that can be exerted by the rotary tong (15) acting alone. The system may also be deployed to apply and hold precise torque forces on the pipe connections. When used to obtain a makeup torque below the maximum rated rotary tong output, the rotary tong (15) is regulated to limit its torque output. When the limited torque is reached, the brake (19) is applied and the cylinder and rod (30, 31) are actuated to apply a smooth, closely controlled increase in torque to the connection. The final torque level may be held constant for a desired length of time. In both the high and low torque applications, the brake (19) prevents the rotary tong (15) from being turned backwardly by the increased torque force applied by actuation of the rod and cylinder assembly (30, 31). Operation of the system may be manually or automatically controlled.

    • The invention provides a selectively releasable braking apparatus (1) for a power tong comprising a braking ring (25) operatively connected to a cage plate (30) of the power tong and a braking surface (4) mechanically connected to the cage plate (30). The apparatus further has a gripping device (11) capable of selectively gripping and holding the braking surface (4) and has a gear train transferring torque from said brake ring (25) to said braking surface (4). The invention further provides an apparatus for aligning the openings in the ring gear (104) and the cage plate (30) with the throat (112) of the power tong and remotely reversing the direction of rotation of the ring gear and cage plate. The apparatus comprises a stop device (36) preventing relative rotation of the ring gear (104) and the cage plate (30) until a preselected torque load is placed on said stop device. The apparatus also has a selectively releasable cage plate brake and a cage plate latch (40) selectively preventing rotation of the cage plate (30).

    • A test stand, for testing several parameters of power tongs used to make and break drill and casing pipe segments, comprises a base having a vertical, rotating shaft bearing along its length one or more disk brakes for stopping rotation of the shaft induced by tongs. In a particular embodiment, a vertical mast on the base supports a rotatable gantry which can lift and move power tongs into place above the test stand. Sensors detect several parameters which determine tong performance. Measurements of torque, RPM, temperature, pressure and speed are contrasted to standards for power tongs of like size and capacity and feedback as to the tongs' ability to make and break drill and pipe joints is provided. In another embodiment, a derrick sits atop the base and supports a second, inverted test stand for testing integrated power tongs.
