    • A sodium-azide-free gas-generating composition includes an oxidizable inorganic fuel, such as a metal, and an oxidizing agent containing oxygen and a metal. The fuel and the oxidizing agent are selected such that water vapor is produced upon reaction between the inorganic fuel and the oxidizing agent. Although a number of inorganic fuels can be employed, a suitable fuel can be a transition metal, another element such as silicon, boron, aluminum, magnesium, and intermetallic compound, hydrides of these metals and mixtures thereof. Suitable oxidizing agents are selected from basic metal carbonates and basic metal nitrates. The fuel and oxidizing agent are selected such that substantially nontoxic gases are produced such as mixtures of water vapor and either carbon dioxide or nitrogen.

    • This invention generally relates to the field of energetic materials, and more particularly to relatively environmentally benign, lead-free energetic material compositions based on aluminum and at least one oxidant, preferably bismuth trioxide. In a preferred embodiment, a composition of the invention comprises from about 95 percent by weight to 70 percent by weight of an oxidant, such as bismuth trioxide, having particle sizes of about 10 nanometers to about 5 micrometers, and, from about 5 percent by weight to about 30 percent by weight of a solid-powdered fuel, wherein the solid-powered fuel comprises aluminum having particle sizes of about 30 nanometers to about 5 micrometers. The composition may also comprise a surface modifier. The compositions of this invention are useful in percussion primers, ignition devices, propellants, explosives, pyrotechnic formulations and similar applications.

    • A novel non-toxic IR tracer composition is provided herein which, when incorporated into an IR tracer projectile which is then fired, generates a dim visibility IR trace. Such IR tracer composition is a non-toxic, metallic-boron- containing, IR tracer composition comprising: from about 20 to about 30 % by weight, or from about 45 to about 60 % by weight, of at least one of potassium chlorate or sodium nitrate; from about 5 to about 16 % by weight of a metallic fuel which consists of metallic boron; optionally, from about 15 to about 25 % by weight, or from about 40 to about 50 % by weight, of a non-metallic fuel which consists of sodium salicylate; from about 5 to about 20 % by weight of a retardant which consists either of iron carbonate, or magnesium carbonate or calcium carbonate; from about 5 to about 15 % by weight of a first binder which consists of calcium resinate; and up to about 7.5 % by weight of a second synthetic resin binder which consists either of a copolymer of hexafluoropropylene and vinylidene fluoride or cellulose acetate butyrate, wherein the total percentage of such ingredients add up to 100 %. A novel IR tracer projectile containing such IR tracer composition for generating a dim visibility IR trace is also provided.
