    • A rotary machine cooling system is provided that includes a housing (12) having an inlet (34) and outlet (40). A rotor (14) supported in the housing for rotation about an axis with the rotor including an outer surface. A stator (19) is disposed within the housing about the rotor having an inner surface adjacent to the outer surface of the rotor. A gap (23) is formed between the inner and outer surfaces sufficient to reduce friction and permit convection cooling. The gap is in fluid communication with the inlet and outlet, and a pumping device pumps a cooling gas from the inlet into the gap and through said outlet. The pumping device (32) includes an impeller affixed to an end portion of the rotor to create an axial airflow into the gap. Preferably, the present invention air cooling system is used in conjunction with a liquid cooling system (24) arranged exteriorly to the stator. The liquid cooling system reduces the amount of air needed to flow between the gap to remove the desired amount of heat from the machine.

    • A rotary machine is provided, such as an electromechanical device, that includes a housing having a lubricating oil disposed within the housing. A shaft is rotatable about an axis relative to the housing. The shaft has a passage extending to an end portion of the shaft. A screw includes a body arranged coaxial to the shaft, and preferably affixed thereto. The screw includes helical blades extending outwardly from the body adjacent to a shroud. The shroud is arranged about the screw forming a gap between the blades and the shroud. Rotation of the shaft and screw pump the oil to the end portion of the shaft and into the passage from which the oil may be delivered to other machine components, such as the bearings. A flow straightener having radial fins may be arranged between the screw and the passage for controlling the flow of oil into the passage preventing a vortex.

    • A bearing is provided particularly suitable for a turbine and turbine related components used in the aerospace industry. More particularly, the bearing is suitable for such applications as pneumatic starters for turbines. The bearing is preferably constructed from a M50 steel, which typically has a pre-treated hardness in the range of approximately 60 to 64 Rc. With the present invention, the bearing is nitrided to obtain a case hardness of approximately 74 Rc. To achieve such a case hardness, the bearing may require nitriding over several days. In one preferred embodiment of the present invention, a pneumatic starter includes a shaft, preferably constructed from M50, that has a portion of its outer surface nitrided. The nitrided surface functions as an inner race of a bearing assembly. Nitriding the portion of the shaft extends the bearing life of the bearing due to its increased harness.
