    • A method of treating non-magnetic iron-bearing material to form an iron-rich component that is separable from a gangue-rich component is disclosed. The method comprises treating the iron-bearing material by roasting the material under reducing conditions which cause (a) formation of separate iron-rich and a gangue-rich components and (b) the iron-rich component to become magnetic. Also disclosed is a method of preparing iron-bearing feedstock for a metallurgical process. This method comprises the aforementioned treatment method and further comprises reducing the size of the treated iron-bearing material to a particle size that enables dry, magnetic separation of the iron-rich component from the gangue-rich component and magnetically separating the iron-rich component from the gangue-rich component.

    • A landfill (10) is lined with an impermeable liner material at (12) and filled with waste, such as household waste. When the landfill is full, it is capped by a cap (14). Degradation of the body of waste material within the landfill creates leachate liquid as a byproduct. Without intervention, the leachate will form a layer (16) of saturated waste material at the bottom of the landfill (10). An extraction well (22) allows leachate to be drawn from the landfill (10) by a pump (26). Injection wells (24) allow leachate to be reintroduced into the landfill (10). Various sensors (36, 38, 40) take measurements associated with the wells (24). Leachate delivery is controlled in accordance with the values obtained. The obtained values may include the leachate head in the well and/or the volume or rate of leachate delivery to the well and/or the elapsed time since commencement of leachate delivery to the well and/or the rate of dispersion of the leachate into the landfill from the well.

    • A method for producing cold heat for cooling a process is provided. Seawater is pumped at a selected depth and cooled to create a mixture of ice and brine. The ice is separated from the brine. Cold heat is obtained by thawing the ice. A process cooling system for producing cold heat is also provided. A pumping station comprises a line system to obtain seawater and direct the seawater to an onshore cooling plant. A refrigerant circulates in an evaporation stage in a refrigeration circuit. A heat exchanger in the evaporation stage freezes a portion of the seawater in the line system with the refrigerant. A cooling plant is connected to the line system to receive the frozen seawater. The cooling plant comprises a separation tank for separating the frozen portion of seawater from brine, and a heat exchanger to cool the process by heat exchange with the frozen seawater.

    • A method and apparatus for processing mail is provided. Mail is placed into an input bin having a conveyor that conveys the mail towards a feeder. The feeder serially feeds the envelopes by engaging the lead envelope in the stack of mail and displacing the lead envelope transverse the stack of mail. The mail is then cut on a side edge and the top edge to cut open each envelope. A transport conveys the cut envelopes to an extractor. The extractor opens the edge-severed mail and presents the contents of the envelopes to an operator who manually extracts the contents. The operator drops the extracted contents onto a conveyor that conveys the contents to an imaging station. The contents are automatically separated and imaged to obtain image data for the contents. The contents are then sorted into a plurality of output bins.
