    • A fluid from a fermentation process or the like is passed or circulated through chambers of a bipolar membrane electrodialysis unit to separate an ionizable organic acid stream and at least one co-ion or residual stream. The organic acid stream is preferably concentrated (e.g., by recirculation, dewatering or both), and a product is recovered from the concentrated stream, for example by crystallization, and other outputs from the electrodialysis unit may be integrated with overall treatment and applied elsewhere in the treatment system. Depleted feed may be returned upstream to enhance yield, condition the medium or form a by-product. Treatment systems of the invention may replace a cation exchange bed and/or various filter arrangements, and recirculation of the feed and product flows through the unit enhance recovery, separation and quality of the target species. An ED chamber may include a filling of ion exchange beads to maintain a desired operating efficiency as the feed is depleted, and the straight­through operation effectively operates as pre-filtration stage to provide downstream product-bearing flows with processing characteristics for enhanced treatment, recovery and product quality. When operated to treat a downstream waste, systems allow additional recovery of value in the form of product, unexpended nutrients, co-factors and/or other components present in the waste.

    • An electrically driven membrane process apparatus is provided comprising a first spacer having a perimeter having a surface with an inner peripheral edge defining an opening, and a recess formed on the inner peripheral edge, and an ion exchange membrane having an outer edge fitted within the recess. The spacer can further comprise a plurality of bosses and an ion exchange membrane having a corresponding plurality of apertures for receiving the bosses. The spacer can include a plastic mesh consisting essentially of polypropylene or polyethylene, and a perimeter surrounding the plastic mesh, the perimeter comprising material selected from the group consisting of thermoplastic vulcanizates and thermoplastic elastomeric olefins. A second spacer is also provided having a continuous flange depending from its surface and surrounding a throughbore, for pinching a portion of the first spacer. A method of injection molding a thin plastic part comprising a perimeter having an inner peripheral edge and a mesh joined to the inner peripheral edge is also provided including the steps of (a) providing first and second mold halves, each of the mold halves having an interior surface and a continuous ridge depending therefrom; and (b) pinching opposite side of the mesh between the ridges to form a flow barrier.

    • The present invention relates to the reaction and to the reaction products of organo-metallic compounds, preferably Li organic compounds, deprotonised engineering-polymers with an aryl main chain and with various aromatic carbonyle compounds containing tertiary basic N. This invention essentially relates to: a) the reaction of a metallised polymer P-Me with aromatic aldehydes and ketones and the potentially resulting reactions (I) (in the case of ketone: R1 and/or R2 represent an aromatic residue with tertiary basic N, while in the case of aldehyde: R1 represents an aromatic residue with tertiary basic N and R2 represents H); b) the reaction of a metallised polymer P-Me with aromatic carboxylic acid esters (X=OR) or with carboxylic acid halides (X=Hal) and the potentially resulting reactions (II), wherein if Ar is an aromatic radical with tertiary basic N, the quaternisation of tertiary N with alkane halides is possible (when using dialkane halides: simultaneous covalent cross-linking), and if Ar is an aromatic radical that can be sulfonated: (III); c) acid-base polymer mixtures and membranes made of acid-base polymer mixtures obtained by: mixing the acidic and basic reaction products mentioned in the reaction equations a) and b); mixing basic polymers of the present invention with arbitrary acidic polymers.
