    • A system (20) for transmitting telemetry data (24) between an underground structure (4) and a location above the underground structure (4) includes a network (30) of receiving devices (32) within the underground structure (4) which gathers telemetry data (24) from a data transmitter (22) located within the underground structure (4). An underground broadcasting station (40) in communication with the network (30) of receiving devices (32) includes an underground processing device for converting the telemetry data (24) into an encoded imp actor signal and a seismic generator in contact with the underground structure (4) and driven by the encoded impactor signal to broadcast an encoded seismic signal (50) through an adjacent earthen formation. The system (20) includes a receiving station (60) having a seismic sensor (62) and a processing device (64). The seismic sensor (62) is in contact with the earthen formation at a remote location substantially above the underground structure (4). The processing device (64) is in communication with seismic sensor (62) and can convert the received encoded seismic signal (50) into telemetry data.

    • A marine air gun (400) generates an acoustic signal in water, for example, during a marine seismic survey. The marine air gun includes digital electronic circuitry (700). The digital electronic circuitry may control an actuator (424) of the marine air gun, digitize and store data from sensors (414, 418) located on or near the marine air gun, send and/or receive digital communications, store and/or output electrical energy, and/or perform other functions. A marine seismic source system (100) that includes multiple air gun clusters (120) may have a separate digital communication link (305, 307) between a command center (106) and each air gun cluster (300a, 300b). Each communication link may provide power and digital communication between the command center and one of the air gun clusters.
