摘要： A golf driver (10) having a head (12) which includes an alpha-beta titanium alloy body (18) and a crown (16) formed of a beta titanium plate which is thinner than the body and brazed to the body. The face of the club head comprising a variable-thickness beta titanium faceplate (30) that is plasma welded to the body. Two weights (24) are attached at the toe (20) and heel (21), respectively, of the body to minimize twisting of the body during an off-center hit. Two additional weights (26, 28) are disposed in the sole of the body in locations causing the center of gravity to be displaced toward the heel and the backside of the club head. A graphite shaft (14) of the driver has at least four sections (40, 42, 44, 46) of different stiffness, defining three bending points (48, 50, 52), to increase the flex action of the shaft and enable an oversized driver to return to an address position at the moment of impact.

In a first mode the wire is attached between a longitudinally movable assembly in a rotatable handle and a fixed assembly at the shaft lower end. The movable assembly includes outer and inner tension tuner members, a collar, a clamp and bifurcated collet, and outer and inner twist-prevention housings. In second and third modes, the wire is attached between a fixed assembly in a non-rotatable handle and a fixed assembly at the shaft lower end. The upper assembly includes a cap member, a wire-end clamping member, and a tension support member. The second mode uses a thin round wire; the third mode uses a thin tape-shaped wire.

摘要： An improved composite golf club shaft (10) and method for its manufacture, and an improved club incorporating the shaft (10). The shaft includes a first elongate segment (40) for mounting the golf club head (80) and a second elongate frustoconical segment (52) for gripping. The first segment (40) is formed by wrapping sheet material around a substantially cylindrical mandrel (10), and the second elongate frustoconical segment (52) is formed therearound to produce a smoothly tapering exterior surface of the shaft (10) having an abrupt interior region of joinder (68) between the segments (40, 52). Such joinder (68) preferably is approximately one-third of the way between the gripping end and the head-mounting end of the shaft. The shaft (10) tapers such that its head-mounting end is less than approximately one-third the diameter of the gripping end. Greatly improved torque and drive distance are achievable with a club made with the shaft (10). The shaft is also lighter and capable of being used without the addition of a grip. As a result, the balance point of the club is much closer to the head of the club than before possible, further improving the performance characteristics of the club.
