    • A silent discharge tube having a structure in which an inner tube is disposed in an outer tube and having a small power consumption and a long life. The silent discharge tube comprises a discharge enclosure which has an outer tube and an inner tube provided inside the outer tube and in which a discharge gas is sealed in the space defined between the outer and inner tubes, an outer electrode provided on the outer surface of the outer tube, and an inner electrode provided on the inner surface of the inner tube wherein either the outer electrode or the inner electrode extends over the whole periphery of the tube, and the other extends over part of the periphery, thereby causing discharge at a part of the tube periphery. At the end of the life of the discharge, the electrode is moved to cause discharge using an unused part.
