    • An emission control device (10) and method are provided for treating exhaust gases to reduce pollutants contained therein. The device (10) includes a first chamber (16) through which the exhaust gas passes. First and second metal grids (26,30) are disposed within the first chamber (16) at a predetermined distance from each other. Voltage is supplied to the first grid (26) via an inductive coil (14) at a predetermined frequency. Electrical sparks are generated between the first and second grids (26,30) which electrically ionizes the treatment chamber and a second chamber having strata (46). The strata (46) can further includes noble metals for treatment of the exhaust gas.

    • An apparatus and method of use with internal combustion engines, such as used for land vehicles, for the on-board recovery and purification of water. The source of water is from the vehicle's exhaust, where it is collected by condensation. The water recovery system consists of a device for cooling the exhaust so as to condense out the water, such as a counter-current flow heat exchanger in combination with a chiller (a refrigerant-cooled heat exchanger), which cools the exhaust below its dew point. Exhaust condensate is collected at the outlet of the chiller. These cooling devices may be coupled with the vehicle's air conditioning system. The condensed water then flows through the water purification portion of the present invention. The water purification system can rely upon solids filtration and different forms of activated carbons and activated carbon fiber composite materials which can be used in combination with ion exchange resins to provide a water purification train which is integrated with the water recover unit on board the vehicle. The water can be purified to have a TOC of less than 2 ppm to meet EPA drinking water standards, as well as Department of Defense tri-service requirements for long-term consumption as specified in TB Med 577. Potable water can be produced at a rate of approximately up to 0.7 gallons/gallon fuel utilizing a HMMWV diesel engine. This allows production of about 15 gallons per day of potable water on-board the HMMWV (based on consumption of about 30 gallons of fuel per day).

    • A purification system of exhaust gases in an internal combustion engine is disposed to a reaction furnace capable of reducing noxious components of the exhaust gases in an exhaust pipe of the internal combustion engine in order to purify the exhaust gases. The purification system comprises a reactor including a honeycomb carrier having a plurality of carrier cells, each of which a photocatalyst layer is coated on, in the reaction furnace, and a plasma generating means having a plurality of electrode cells and mounted on an inner end an an outer end of the honeycomb carrier. The honeycomb carrier includes a photocatalyst layer coated on a wall surface of each of the carrier cells, the photocatalyst layer being activated by a plasma optical source. Further, a volume and the number of the electrode cells are varied depending upon the variation of those of the carrier cells, the carrier cells having 100 - 900 number per unit area (1 inch X 1 inch). Furthermore, each of the electrodes of the plasma generating means includes electrodes containing a wire mesh formed by intersecting and arranging wires, the electrodes having a regular length in horizontal direction, a cross section of each of the electrodes being in the form of a honeycomb, a wire mesh roll, or a punched plate, and is closely or distantly disposed to each of the honeycomb carriers, and edges of each of the electrode cells are arranged to be positioned at a center of each of the carrier cells. The purification system further comprises a plurality of reactors in the reaction furnace.
