    • An electromechanical lock (10) includes a housing (20) containing a microcontroller (50), a power source (52), a cam, and a locking lever for holding a U-shaped lock bar (14) in a closed, locked position within the housing (20). The lock (10) further includes several buttons (26, 27, 28) on the housing (20) for entering a sequence of alphanumeric characters of a combination code and a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) for showing the alphanumeric characters, independently, when entering the code. Messages may also be displayed, including advertisements and company logos, upon completion of a correct code entry to open the lock (10). The microcontroller (50) stores one or more combination codes and message data and controls actuation of the cam, upon entry of the correct combination code, to momentarily release the lever from the lock bar, allowing the lock bar to be pulled out from the housing (20), thereby opening the lock (10). In another embodiment, the lock (10) is further provided with a transceiver (200) and an antenna (190) for wireless communication with a provider of the lock (10), thereby allowing the provider to change and/or update stored message data and to remotely program and manipulate data stored on the microcontrollers of a large number of the electromechanical lock units (10) throughout a vast geographical area of distribution.

    • Latching components of a padlock are driven by a motor (48) between latched and released position. An encoder element (80) with associated optical elements (88, 90) provides position information to a control circuit. The control circuit correlates the position information with the signal directing power to the motor (48) so that the motor (48) is precisely controlled for moving the latching elements between release and latch. If the motor jams (sensed by overcurrent), it is operated briefly in alternating directions to try and dislodge the grit or ice causing the jam. The padlock shackle (24) is latched into place by balls (94) which are driven in recesses in the shackle legs (24). The use of plural balls (94) on at least one side helps isolate the drive motor (48) and gears (42) from grit that may enter through the padlock's top shackle holes.

    • A conventional padlock is constructed such that a longer leg of an inverted U-shaped chord is mounted in a body to be freely slidable in the body but not to separate from the body, a shorter leg of the chord is formed with a notch for locking, and a tip end of a latch for locking is pushed into the notch for locking to establish a locking state. Such a conventional padlock is faulty in that it is unlocked only by applying a shock as strong as a human power to a side surface of the body on a longer leg side. A projection (2a) is provided on a notch for locking and a projection (3a) is provided on a tip end of a latch for locking so that the projections (2a, 3a) may be engaged with each other to establish a locking state, whereby a padlock is obtained which will not be unlocked even when a shock as strong as a human power is applied to a side surface of a body of the padlock on a longer leg side.

    • A padlock which comprises a generally U-shaped hasp (2), a lock body (1), and a locking key (13). The hasp (2) has one leg longer than the other. Said longer leg (3) has an end portion (4) wider than the rest of the hasp (2). The wider portion (4) has an elongate slot (6) which extends parallel to the leg (3), and a recess (7) which opens sideways towards the shorter leg (5).     • A lock includes a lock body, an access restricting structure, a locking mechanism, a lock interface, and a mode selection mechanism. The locking mechanism is operable to secure the access restricting structure in a first position when the locking mechanism is in a locked condition. The lock interface is operable to move the locking mechanism between the locked condition and an unlocked condition. The mode selection mechanism is operable to selectively place the locking mechanism in either one of a first mode and a second mode. In the first mode, movement of the access restricting structure to the first position automatically moves the locking mechanism to the locked condition. In the second mode, the access restricting structure is movable to the first position without moving the locking mechanism to the locked condition.
