    • A valve for use in a chest drainage device is disclosed, the chest drainage device is adapted to receive liquid and air from a patient’s chest cavity via an inlet and to permit air to escape through an outlet for air to leave the chest drain, the inlet and outlet define a flow path and the valve is disposed along the flow path. The valve has a valve element that separates an upstream chamber from a downstream chamber and has a first and second sealing surface that are opposed so that when the first and second sealing surfaces are in contact, air pressure below a predetermined value will be prevented from moving from the downstream location to the upstream location. The valve element allows air to move from the upstream chamber to the downstream chamber at a low pressure differential. A pressure relief actuating element is disposed in the valve and located adjacent the valve element such that when the predetermined sub-atmospheric pressure limit between the upstream side and the downstream side is reached or exceeded, the valve element deforms and contacts the pressure relief actuating element such that the post causes the first and second sealing surfaces to partially separate and reduce the pressure differential.

The adaptor has a body adapted to fit onto the mouth of a bottle, the body having an inlet fitting adapted to be connected to a tube of the drainage system to permit entry of fluid into the bottle, and a pressure relief valve adapted to communicate with the interior of the bottle to permit release of pressure in the event of a pressure build-up occurring within the bottle.     • Featured is a pressure control regulator including a housing, a sealing member disposed within the housing, a flexible member and a biasing mechanism. In a more particular embodiment, the second pressure source is a suction source and the regulator is a suction pressure regulator.

    • The present invention is a gross filter (10) in a drainage device for filtering fluids drained form the pleural cavity of a patient comprising a filter body (19) having a first side panel (14), second side panel (16), back panel (12), bottom panel (18) that assemble to form a generally box shaped filter with open front (15), and top portions (17). The gross filter is located in the first of two sub-chambers (68, 70) that comprise the collection chamber (13). The filter body further comprises a filter screen sized for filtering gross particulate, such as blood clots, that may become entrained in fluid drained form a patient. To further facilitate the filtering of blood through the filter body when a blocked state exists at the bottom panel portion thereof the first and second side panels are angled toward each other at their bottom ends, and gradually spaced apart form the collection chamber walls in order to permit unimpeded filtering of fluid through the side panels.
