    • A system and a method for coding and decoding video data are invented. In a system and method of video data compression a video frame (32) is divided into a sequence of image blocks (38), wherein one of several possible block-coding modes is an implicit global motion compensation (IGMC) mode, which is used to copy pixels from a previous frame (32) displaced by a predicted motion vector. In another embodiment of the invention, a system and method of a video data compression, a video frame (32) is segmented into a sequence of slices (36), wherein each slice (36) includes a number of macroblocks (38). Respective slices (36) are encoded and a signal is included in the header (44) of an encoded slice (40) to indicate whether the slice (40) is GMC enabled, that is, whether global motion compensation is to be used in reconstructing the encoded slice. If so, GMC information, such as information representing a set of motion vectors (42a-42d), is included with the slice. In a useful embodiment each slice (36) of a frame (32) contains the same GMC information, to enhance resiliency against errors. In another embodiment different slices (36) of a frame (32) contain different GMC information. In either embodiment, motion vectors (42a-42d) for each image of a particular encoded slice (40) can be reconstructed using GMC information contained only in the particular encoded slice.

    • In a method of video data compression a video frame in a sequence of frames is divided into a number of macroblocks, a particular macroblock being adjacent to a number of previously coded macroblocks including both intra-coded and inter-coded macroblocks. The method includes selecting either a full prediction or limited prediction type in encoding the particular macroblock to provide a corresponding data bit stream, full prediction using both adjacent inter-coded and intra-coded macroblocks, and limited prediction using intra-coded macroblocks only. A signal is provided along with the bit stream to indicate the selected prediction type to a decoder disposed to recover data from the bit stream. The prediction type may be either signaled explicitly, such as by providing a code word in the bit stream, or may be inferred implicitly by selected values or levels of a coding variable.

    • A method of video data compression is provided which is comparatively efficient in compressing data, and at the same time enables transmission of compressed data with sufficient robustness to withstand losses in the transmission channel. A frame of data is divided into coded macroblocks and skipped macroblocks which are grouped into respective slices in a sequence of slices. Respective slices are allowed to contain arbitrary numbers of consecutive macroblocks, and can begin and end at arbitrary positions within the frame. A run-length codeword, comprising a small number of bits, is inserted at the end of a slice to indicate the total number of skipped macroblocks between the final coded macroblock and the end of the slice. To further enhance error resilience an additional codeword, which also indicates the total number of skipped macroblocks, may be inserted at the beginning of the next-following slice.

    • A method of indicating bit stream subsets in a compressed video bit stream is provided. The method comprises receiving the bit stream, dividing the bit stream into packets, wherein each packet comprises either one of video data or supplemental information, marking each packet (310–312, 320–322) with a first subset identifier (s0, s1) which is associated with a corresponding bit stream subset, and providing a first sequence parameter set (SPS) (310), marked with the same first subset identifier as its associated bit stream subset. The first SPS further comprises a second subset identifier (b1) indicating a decoding dependency (304) of the bit stream subset associated with the first subset identifier on a bit stream subset associated with the second subset identifier. Further, a method of extracting video packets from a video bit stream is provided. The method comprises receiving packets from the bit stream, extracting a first SPS (310), which is marked with the first subset identifier (s0) and further comprising the second subset identifier (b1), using the first and the second subset identifier as relevant subset identifiers, and, for each received packet (310–312, 320– 322), inspecting the first subset identifier (s0, s1) of the packet, and extracting, under the condition that the extracted first subset identifier matches one of the relevant subset identifiers, the packet from the bit stream.
