    • The invention relates to a display device comprising at least two light sources, a display panel and an illumination system provided with a beam expander on which the light sources are positioned at opposite faces for expanding the light from the light sources in a line like shape, which beam expander emits the expanded light via an exit surface, and an illumination light guide having an entrance surface for receiving the expanded light from the beam expander and for distributing the received light for homogeneous illumination of the display panel. In order to improve the light efficiency of the display device the beam expander is provided with first symmetric grooves for coupling out the light with a skimming emission distribution with respect to an exit surface of the beam expander and an entrance surface of the illumination light guide is provided with second symmetric grooves adapted to the skimming emission distribution of the light from the beam expander for directing the light along the normal to the entrance surface. The skimming emission distribution reduces the number of reflections and thereby light losses in the beam expander.
