    • A process for producing articles comprising anodized films exhibiting areas of different colour and the articles thus produced. The process comprises anodizing a surface (16) of an article made of or coated with aluminum or anodizable aluminum alloys to produce an anodic film (11) having a porous outer layer and a non-porous inner barrier layer (15) between the porous layer and the underlying surface (16) of the metal article. A metal is electrodeposited into the pores (12) of the film to form a semi-reflective layer (18) of metal deposits (17) in the film (11) which generates a visible colour by effects including light interference between light reflected from the semi-reflective layer (18) and light reflected from the underlying metal layer (10). A cathodically biased electrode (20) is brought into contact with or close proximity to limited areas (A) of the film (11) to cause the barrier layer (15) to thicken in those limited areas only. This step in itself may create a pattern of different colours in the contacted and non-contacted areas of the film (11). However, further anodization of the surface is preferably carried out before, after, or both before and after, the contact with the electrode (20), at a voltage which causes the film (11) to thicken below the deposits in the non-contacted areas (B), but not significantly in the contacted areas (A). If desired, the film (11) can be detached from the aluminum article (10) on which it was formed and a very thin layer (23) of metal applied to the exposed surface (22) of the film in order to make a very thin, flexible, planar, patterned article suitable for use as a packaging sheet, or the like.

    • A process for producing unsintered agglomerates from dust originating from a product stream of an industrial process involving thermal treatment of materials containing alumina such that the agglomerates are suitable for handling and return to the product stream or an industrial feed stream, and the agglomerates so formed. The process involves binding the dust particles together using rehydratable alumina and water as a binder. If the dust already contains rehydratable alumina (e.g. dust from alumina and bauxite calciners), further rehydratable alumina need not necessarily be added. If the dust contains little or no alumina, a source of rehydratable alumina sould be added to the dust. If the dust contains an alumina hydrate, some or all of the dust may be heated to form rehydratable alumina. The dust and/or added rehydratable alumina may be ground, if desired, to create fresh surfaces and a range of sizes suitable for compaction. In all cases, the resulting solids should have a ratio of dust to rehydratable alumina of 0.5 - 5 : 1 by weight. After mixing the solids with water (usually 2 to 40 parts, more preferably 10 to 35 parts, by weight per 100 parts by weight of solids), the resulting mixture is agglomerated and the agglomerates are preferably aged for up to 24 hours in an atmosphere of high relative humidity in order to strengthen the agglomerates. Optionally, drying and calcining (without sintering) may then be carried out. The resulting dust agglomerates can be handled without significant fracturing or dust generation and can, if desired, be returned to the product stream or to an industrial feed stream.

    • The invention relates to busbar arrangements for aluminum alectrolytic cells. In a first aspect, the invention provides at least one generally horizontal collector busbar (15A-15D, 16A-16D) on each side of the cell and a number of current tapping points (18A-18D, 19A-19D) along each collector busbar so that current flows along the collector busbar in opposite directions on each side of the taps. This produces changes of sign in the vertical component of the magnetic field acting on the pad in the longitudinal direction and helps to prevent pad instabilities. In a second aspect, the current taps for the collector busbars (18A-18D, 19A-19D) are vertically disposed so as to convey current well below the level of the metal pad (17) so that adverse magnetic effects caused by further distribution of the current are minimized. In a third aspect, when the cells are arranged in a row, current is conveyed between cells in a round-end under-cell crisscross arrangement with long horizontal runs (29A, 27B') of the busbars of adjacent cells being positioned close together with currents flowing in opposite directions to counteract adverse magnetic effects.

    • Coolant containment apparatus for a rolling mill in which aqueous coolant liquid is sprayed onto the upper and lower work roll (11, 12 respectively) surfaces by upper and lower spray heads (24, 28 respectively) only on the exit side of the mill, including an enclosure (32) maintained at subatmospheric pressure and surrounding the upper spray head (24) and adjacent upper work roll (11) and backup rool (10) surfaces, upper and lower air dam members (40, 42 respectively) extending along the edges of the enclosure (32) above and below the spray head to define narrow air gaps at the roll surfaces, slippers (44) connected to ends of the dam members and in rubbing contact with the rolls to maintain the gap widths constant, and seal members (48) mounted on the roll supports (15) at the ends of the mill and cooperating with the enclosure to confine the enclosure interior. A wiper (50) removes coolant liquid from the upper work roll on the entry side of the mill, while collectors (52) catch and remove coolant spraying through the ends of the roll bite (18) at the exit side of the mill, and air is blown into the roll bite on the exit side to move coolant liquid from the surface of an emerging rolled metal strip (20) into the collectors. Below the mill pass line, a shield (58) protects the rolled metal strip from coolant from the lower spray head (28).
