    • An endobronchial tube assembly has a selector (2) at its machine end (20) by which passageways (3 and 4) along the tube shaft (10) to the right or left lung can be selectively blocked. The selector (2) has a housing (30) with two identical slider plates (50 and 51) movable laterally along the housing by squeezing together finger grips (57 and 58), (157 and 158) on the slider plates. An aperture (54, 154) through each plate (50 and 51) aligns with ports (44, 46) and (45, 47) on front and rear panels (31 and 32) of the housing (30) to permit gas flow when the plate is in an inner position. When the plate (50, 51) is displaced outwards its aperture (54, 154) moves out of alignment with the ports to block gas flow. Tabs (66, 166) on the two plates (50 and 51) engage one another to prevent both plates being moved to outer blocking positions at the same time.

    • An end fitting (31) is formed at the patient end of an inner cannula (3) for a tracheostomy tube (1) by punching small holes (33) close to one end (34) of an ePTFE shaft (30). The end is then swaged to form an expanded region (30') and a preformed tubular insert (40) of a thermoplastic material is inserted to cover the holes (33) on the inside. An outer part (46) of the same thermoplastic material is then overmoulded on the outside of the shaft 30 so that its material (47) flows through the holes (33) and bonds with the inner insert (40), thereby securing the inner and outer parts together around the end of the shaft.

    • IMS apparatus has a pre-concentrator (9) in its inlet (7). A pressure pulser (8) connected to the interior of the housing (1) applies small alternating negative and positive pressure pulses to the housing so that air is drawn in and out of the inlet (7) in a panting fashion. This causes analyte to be adsorbed by the pre-concentrator (9) but does not allow analyte to enter sufficiently to be ionized and detected. After a time sufficient to accumulate a detectable amount of analyte on the pre-concentrator (9) the apparatus switches to a desorb phase. The pre-concentrator (9) is heated to desorb the analyte and the pulser (8) produces a larger negative pulse sufficient to draw the liberated analyte far enough into the reaction region (3) for ionization and detection.

    • Apparatus for treating pneumothorax comprises a catheter (1, 101, 201) and a needle (12, 212) with a pointed tip (15, 215) removably received in the catheter. The catheter has a planar mount (3, 8) with an adhesive surface (9) or suture holes (8', 108') by which the catheter can be secured to the patient. A thumb pad 14 at the upper end of the needle (12, 212) enables pressure to be applied during insertion. The apparatus may include a visual or audible indicator (232, 237, 30, 35, 38, 39, 49', 50, 54, 57, 62, 66, 70, 73, 77, 80, 86) to indicate correct placement of the apparatus. A one-way valve (121) may be attached with the catheter (1, 101, 201) after removal of the needle (12, 212) to allow air to escape from the pleural cavity without allowing air to flow into the cavity via the apparatus.

    • A ship's radar system includes one or more radar antennas (1, 2), a display screen (45), (46) and processor (25, 26) that receives signals from the antenna and provides two separate radar display representations (61) and (62) on the same screen. The two display representations (61) and (62) are separately controllable. One display representation (61) is larger than the other (62) and may show radar information at a larger scale and smaller range than the other representation. The display representations (61) and (62) could differ from each other in being derived from different antennas (1) and (2) or could differ in setting, orientation, frequency or threshold.
