    • The present invention provides a composite insulation material. The material includes a layer of an insulation, such as foam or fiberglass, and a paper layer. The paper layer is coated with a moisture vapor barrier, using a coating composition that includes a resin latex and a component having a crystalline platelet structure. Suitable resin latexes include poly(meth)acrylates, carboxylated or non-carboxylated butadiene-acrylonitrile, polystyrene, styrene-acrylonitrile, styrene-acrylonitrile-butadiene, styrene acrylates, styrene-butadiene, carboxylated styrene butadiene, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, waterborne polyurethanes, vinyl acrylics, polyvinylidene chloride, ethyl vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate- ethylene copolymers, and copolymers, terpolymers, and blends thereof. A suspending agent for the crystalline platelet component can be present, and is typically a hydrophilic polymer. The coating compositions can include wax, or can be essentially devoid of wax. A hydrophobic agent other than wax can optionally be added. The crystalline platelet structure can be unmodified, or modified to increase its hydrophobicity. The composite material can also be in the form of a foil/scrim/Kraft paper laminate, which can be combined with a layer of insulation if desired. The insulation materials can be used, for example, to insulate pipes and ductwork, or other aspects of buildings.

    • Tablets for the controlled release of an active ingredient in a zero-order or near zero-order fashion are provided. The tablet includes a core and a coating. The core includes at least one active pharmaceutical agent and a polyethylene oxide with a molecular weight of between about 1,000,000 and 10,000,000, preferably between about 4,000,000 and 8,000,000. The core material is optionally, but preferably, coated with a cellulosic material. The active pharmaceutical agent can be hydrophilic, hydrophobic, or amphiphilic. When the active pharmaceutical agent is a hydrophilic agent, it is preferred that the coating is a relatively hydrophobic cellulose, such as ethylcellulose or propylcellulose. However, if the tablet is uncoated, it can provide a near-zero-order release rate rather than a zero-order release rate. When the active pharmaceutical agent is a hydrophobic or amphiphilic agent, the hydrophilic polymeric carrier is the same as in the first embodiment, the coating is a relatively more hydrophilic cellulose. The release rate for the active pharmaceutical agent can be controlled by adjusting the thickness of the coating, and, optionally, by adjusting the concentration of the polymeric excipients, as well as certain non-polymeric excipients which may optionally be present. An advantage of using relatively high molecular weight polyethylene oxide is that the release is pH independent, unlike where ionic polymers such as polyacrylic acids are used. Further, active pharmaceutical agents including functional groups that might react with such polymers can be used without an adverse reaction between the active agent and the polymer.

    • Improved aromachemical derivatives, and fragrances and flavorings including the derivatives, that have a longer useful shelf life than the aromachemicals from which they can be derived, are disclosed. In particular, the derivatives maintain the fragrance characteristics of the aromachemicals, while lowering the allergic properties, increasing the stability, and/or increasing the odor intensity. Also disclosed are methods of making the derivatives, and articles of manufacture including the derivatives. In one embodiment, the derivatives are prepared by replacing one or more double bonds in citral with a thioether, cyclopropyl, oxirane, or thiirane group. The cyclopropane ring can be unsubstituted, or substituted with one or two lower alkyl, preferably methyl groups. The alkyl groups can optionally be substituted, for example, with electron donating groups, electron with drawing groups, groups which increase the hydrophilicity or hydrophobocity, and the like. In another embodiment, the derivatives are prepared by replacing the aldehyde group in the essential oil with a nitrile, methyl ether or acetal group. The acetal groups can provide the compounds with a long lasting flavor or fragrance, where the acetals slowly hydrolyze to provide the aldehyde group in the parent essential oil. In some embodiments, both the aldehyde and at least one of the double bond functional groups are both derivatized as described herein. Examples of suitable articles of manufacture include candles, air fresheners, perfumes, disinfectant compositions, hypochlorite (bleach) compositions, beverages such as beer and soda, denture cleanser tablets and flavored orally-delivered products such as lozenges, candies, and the like.
