    • A control circuit for an inductive device (1) providing a first function when driven by a main DC power supply (2) generating a first voltage. The circuit comprises an auxiliary power supply (6) for supplying a second voltage to a part (3) of the circuit, the second voltage having a magnitude greater than the first voltage. A switch (4) is connected in series with the inductive device (1) for periodically switching the power supply to the device (1) on and off to thereby induce transient voltages higher than the first voltage.     • A driver circuit for driving an electrical motor coil is provided which comprises combined switched inductance boost voltage converter circuitry and switched inductance buck voltage converter circuitry. An input node of the driver circuit is provided to be coupled with the electrical motor coil, which provides the inductive element of both the boost and buck circuitry. Further the boost and buck circuitry share a storage capacitor, which provides the capacitive element of each circuitry, and a voltage developed across the storage capacitor by the boost circuitry forms an input of the switched inductance buck voltage converter circuitry. Bidirectional driving of the electrical motor coil is thus provided from a driver circuit which only need be supplied with a single unidirectional supply and the current drawn from that supply is significantly reduced because of the manner in which the boost and buck circuitry operate synergistically to recycle electrical power which is moved back and forth between the electrical motor coil and the storage capacitor. A corresponding driver board, electrical motor driver apparatus, method of operating a driver circuit and apparatus are also provided.

    • Boost Mode Regulator techniques are used to provide regulated a.c. or d.c. output from a.c. or d.c. sources. One embodiment involves regulation of the output of an a.c. source (53) to provide a regulated d.c. voltage. The source inductance (LA, LB, LC) becomes part of the boost mode circuit, thus avoiding the losses associated with the addition of external inductors. When a three-phase alternator (53) is the power source, the circuit (61) comprises a six diode (D1A, D1B, D1C, D2A, D2B, D2C), three-phase rectifier bridge, three FET transistors (QA, QB, QC) and a decoupling capacitor. The invention involves shorting the output of the power source to allow storage of energy within the source inductance. During this time, the decoupling capacitor (67) supports the load. When the short is removed, the energy stored in the inductances is delivered to the load. Because the circuit uses the integral magnetics of the source to provide the step-up function, the efficiency of the design can be quite high. In another embodiment, the leakage inductance of an isolation transformer is used to provide regulated a.c. or d.c. outputs from an a.c. source and to provide regulated a.c. or d.c. output from a d.c. source. Where a d.c. source is used, chopper circuits are used on the primary side of the transformer. The invention provides for regulation of the output voltage or for maintaining a power factor substantially close to unity.
