    • A system and method of co-allocating resources within a compute environment are disclosed. The method embodiment of the invention comprises receiving a request for a reservation for a first type of resource, analyzing constraints and guarantees associated with the first type of resource, identifying a first group of resources that meet the request for the first type of resource and storing in a first list, receiving a request for a reservation for a second type of resource, analyzing constraints and guarantees associated with the second type of resource, identifying a second group of resources that meet the request for the second type of resource and storing in a second list, calculating a co-allocation parameter between the first group of resources and the second group of resources and reserving resources according to the calculated co-allocation parameter of the first group of resources and the second group of resources. The request may also request exclusivity of the reservation.

    • An architecture for a database process that can process many large queries simultaneously without creating bottlenecks uses a separate database server process to act as the interface with the processes generating the database queries, and a database engine process to process the queries. The database server receives the query notifications and queues the query structure it then passes the query to the database engine when it becomes available. The present invention allows the database server to service small queries it receives, such as requests for configuration data which are critical, and allows a configuration of multiple database engines to service several large queries simultaneously. The database engine process does not actively receive requests from the database server. Rather, it requests work from the database as it becomes available employing a time-out mechanism when the database engine is idle. According to another aspect of the present invention, the database processes perform their own load balancing.

    • A meter data management (MDM) system processes imported blocks of utility data collected from a plurality of utility meters, sensors, and/or control devices by using independent parallel pipelines associated with differing processing requirements of the data blocks. The MDM system determines processing requirements for each of the imported data blocks, selects one of the pipelines that matches the determined processing requirements for each of the imported data blocks, and directs the data blocks to the selected one of the pipelines for processing. The pipelines may include a validation pipeline for validation processing, an estimation pipeline for estimation processing and a work item pipeline for work item processing.

    • The invention concerns scheduling an application comprised of precedence constrained parallel tasks on a high-performance computer system. The computer system has a plurality of processors each enabled to operate on different voltage supply levels. First, a priority order for the tasks based on the computation and communication costs of the tasks is determined. Next, the based on the priority order of the tasks, assigning each task both a processor and a voltage level that substantially minimises energy consumption and completion time for performing that task when compared to energy consumption and completion time for performing that task on different combinations of processor and voltage level. It is an advantage of the invention that the scheduling takes account not only completion time (makespan), but also energy consumption. Aspects of the invention include a method, software, a scheduling module of a computer and a schedule.
