    • A bearing actuator module comprises a support bearing assembly having a mounting ring (1) adapted to be mounted to an application support structure; a rotatable gear (G2) received within the mounting ring for rotation relative to said mounting ring. A drive subassembly (DS) which rotates said rotatable gear (G2) is removably received in the support bearing assembly. The drive subassembly comprises a stationary gear (G1), a plurality of pinion assemblies, each of which comprises a first pinion P1 which meshes with the gear G1 and a second pinion which meshes with the gear G2. The pinion assemblies are mounted in a carrier (10), which is rotated by a motor (M). A brake assembly (B) is provided to prevent rotation of the rotatable gear (G2) when the motor is not activated. Additionally, a feed back or position sensor is provided which indicates the relative rotational position of the carrier (and hence of the rotatable gear (G2)).

    • A planetary traction drive transmission (I, II, III) has a sun roller (2, 102, 104) provided with two inner raceways (22, 24, 122, 126) which are presented outwardly and taper downwardly away from each other. It also has two outer rings (4, 6, 106, 108) located within a housing (14, 116), with the rings surrounding the sun roller and having tapered raceways (26, 30, 132, 134) presented inwardly toward the tapered raceways of the sun roller. In addition the transmission has planet rollers (8, 10, 110, 112) which are organized in two rows, there being a separate row within each ring. The rollers have tapered side faces (34, 40, 136, 140) along which they contact the raceways of the sun roller and the rings. They are also organized in pairs, with a roller of each row forming a pair. The rollers of a pair contact each other at beveled end faces (36, 42, 142, 148) on the rollers, and thus each roller of the pair serves to back and axially position the other roller of the pair. At all lines of contact between the rollers and the raceways and between the rollers themselves pure rolling contact, characterized by the absence of spinning, exists. In one embodiment (I) the raceways of the sun roller are locked together and relative rotation occurs between the outer rings. In another embodiment (II) the outer rings are locked together and relative rotation occurs between the raceways of the sun roller. Each embodiment provides high speed and torque ratios in a very compact package.
