    • An air turbine apparatus (10) for use with a combustion engine either as a muffler or as an air intake device is comprised of a housing (12) defining an expansion chamber (20) and an airfoil (50) positioned within the housing (12). The airfoil (50) includes a central aperture (52) extending longitudinally there through that is in fluid communication with both the inlet (18) and the outlet (16) of the housing (12). The airfoil (50) is configured to allow gases flowing through the inlet (18) to flow between the outer edge of the airfoil (50) and the housing (12) and through the aperture (52) of the airfoil (50). In addition, the air travelling through the housing (12) is caused to spin as it travels through the housing (12). This rotational flow increased the rate of flow of gases through the air turbine device (10). An induction tube (22) is provided between the airfoil (50) and the outlet (16) of the housing (12) to encourage turbulent flow of gases without restricting flow to produce a muffling effect and thus a dampening of noise from the combustion engine.

    • A sound silencer (10) for insertion in a duct having a fluid medium flowing therethrough includes an outer housing (20) having an open entry end (24), an open exit end (25), a base portion (21), a roof portion (22), and a pair of opposed sidewalls (23). The silencer further includes a plurality of spaced apart sound attenuating members (30) which are disposed upright within the housing (20). The sound attenuating members (30) are arranged in columns (X) and rows (Y), each of the sound attenuating members (30) being disposed substantially normal to the housing base (21) and extending from the base (21) to the housing roof (22) such that the sound attenuating members (30) define a first plurality of through passageways (L) substantial parallel to the direction of the main flow of the fluid medium and extending from the entry end (24) of the housing to the exit end (25) thereof and a second plurality of through passageways (W) disposed substantially perpendicular to the direction of the main flow of the fluid medium and extending from one of the housing side walls (23) to the other side wall (23). Each of the sound attenuating members (30) may be substantially filled with a sound absorptive material (34), with each face (31, 32) of the sound attenuating members (30) being acoustically transparent, or alternatively opaque. Thus, the silencer (10) combines dissipative, i.e., sound absorptive components (31, 32, 34) with the overall reactive configuration of the silencer (10) so as to effectively attenuate noise in a wide range of high and low frequencies.

    • A butterfly valve noise suppressor (10) is provided for reducing the noise generated by a gas flow passing through an open butterfly valve having a disc (16) pivotally mounted in a valve housing (12) for rotation about a transverse axis between an open and a closed position thereof. The noise suppressor (20) includes a plurality of flat and perforated baffle plates (22) arranged in a cruciform configuration, mounted in a flow path immediately downstream of the pivotal disc, axially extending and thereby dividing the downstream flow path into four axial and quadrant cross-sectional segments (24). The gas flow passing the edge of the pivotal disc in the valve generates a flow turbulence to form an unsteady large wake downstream of the valve. This unsteady wake is the source of noise. The cruciform baffle plates (21) permit the gas flow to pass therethrough without obstruction thereto, while allowing the turbulence to communicate laterally through the perforation (26), thereby dissipating the wake unsteadiness to reduce noise. The butterfly valve noise suppressor according to the present invention provides a better acoustic result compared to a muffler used in a conventional butterfly valve, and is lighter, durable, simpler and more economical to manufacture.

    • The invention relates to a silencer for the exhaust gas or suction air of a combustion engine or for some other pulsative gas flow, whereby the silencer can be connected between an inlet flow duct (1) having a first cross-sectional flow area (A1) and an outlet flow duct (2), and whereby the silencer comprises a plurality of individual silencer channels (3) having different lengths and being arranged in parallel regarding the flow (F3), whereby the gases (10) pass through the silencer channels from the inlet flow duct to the outlet flow duct. The total combined cross-sectional flow area (A3) of all silencer channels is not substantially smaller than said first cross-sectional flow area (A1). The silencer further comprises a mixing chamber (4) which is located between the outlet openings (5) of the silencer channels (3) and the outlet flow duct (2). The silencer channels discharge into the mixing chamber common to all silencer channels, whereby the cross-sectional flow area (A4) of this mixing chamber is substantially larger than the total combined cross-sectional flow area (A3) of the silencer channels.

    • A system and method of attenuating noise generated in a multicylinder internal combustion engine as a result of opening and closing of the exhaust and intake valves in which cross passages extend between regions of the exhaust and intake manifolds adjacent the exhaust and intake valves of different cylinders in which the exhaust and intake valves open at approximately the same time. The acoustic waves of the noise caused by opening of the exhaust and intake valves respectively are set in mutual opposition to each other to thereby substantially cancel each other. A low mass flexible diaphragm in each cross passage prevents cross flow of exhaust gases while allowing transmission of the acoustic waves. Porous plugs restrict flow to the diaphragm while being sufficiently open to allow free transmission of the noise sound waves to the diaphragm to not impair the mutual cancellation process.
