    • The invention is an indwelling endourethral catheter, which is structurally similar to prior art Foley catheters with an additional feature that overcomes the common problem of significant damage to the patient caused by unsafely removing the catheter from the body before actively deflating the anchoring mechanism. The additional feature is a tear zone, which is a location at which the walls of the catheter are weaker than the rest of the catheter walls, is designed to at least cause a tear or rupture in at least one of the walls of the catheter tube when the catheter is pulled proximally with a force large enough to cause an inflated anchoring member to be pulled out of the bladder. Embodiments of the catheter of the invention additionally comprise a recoil limiting member disposed between the tear zone and the urethral orifice outside the patient's body to prevent part of the catheter tube from remaining inside the patient©s body after the tube tears at a tear zone.

    • A multi-lumen catheter (10) and method for inserting same in a patient is disclosed. The catheter (10) includes an elongated, central, multi-lumen tube portion (12) having a proximal end and a distal end. The central tube portion (12) has a substantially cylindrical outer shape and is internally segmented into a plurality of lumens. A distal branch portion includes a plurality of single-lumen distal extension tubes (18, 20). A proximal branch portion includes a plurality of single-lumen proximal extension tubes (14, 16). Each proximal extension tube (14, 16) has a distal first end and a proximal second end. The distal first end of each proximal extension tube (14, 16) is connected to the proximal end of the central tube portion (12) such that the single lumen of each distal extension tube (14, 16) is in fluid communication with one of the plurality of lumens of the central tube portion (12). Selectively attachable hub connectors (72, 74) are provided for selective attachment to the distal extension tubes (18, 20) and connection of the catheter (10) to a fluid exchange device.

    • A catheter provided with a guidewire catheter lumen having a thin covering that is easily punctured by a guidewire at virtually any desired point along the catheter length. The thin covering may be integral with the catheter shaft, or may be a separate component that covers only the portion of the catheter shaft immediately adjacent the outer portion of the guidewire lumen, or may be a thin tubular construct that surrounds the entire catheter shaft. The covering is preferably relatively translucent, allowing for good visualization of the location of the end of the guidewire to enable puncturing of the covering at the desired location along the length of the catheter shaft. The covering is also preferably tear resistant at puncture sites. The catheter shaft is preferably made of a material having a color that provides good visibility against an operating field, and more preferably is phosphorescent either entirely or in part. Materials suitable for the catheter shaft are polymeric materials well known in the art; the catheter shaft may optionally be provided with metallic stiffening components such as wires or hypotubes along all or part of the catheter length.
