    • The present invention provides various apparatuses and methods that allow point of purchase products to be automatically dispensed. In an embodiment, the present invention operates with a self-scanning checkout and enables products to be dispensed with other retail items that a consumer collects and brings to the point of purchase. The product is immediately dispensed and provided to the consumer at the point of purchase. The cost of the dispensed product is added to the cost of the collected and transported retail items. The consumer makes one payment for both the dispensed product and the collected and transported retail items. In another embodiment, the present invention is modular and operates in a quick service restaurant environment. The present invention requires little counter/floor space, adds little to the cost of labor, can be mounted in a variety of locations, dispenses in any direction and integrates with virtually any existing system.

The system includes a conveyor subsystem for moving the items, a housing that enclosed a portion of the conveyor subsystem, a lighting subsystem that illuminates an area within the housing, visual sensors that can take images of the items including UPCs, and a checkout system that receives the images from the visual sensors and automatically identifies the items. The system may include a scale subsystem located under the conveyor subsystem to measure the weights of the items, where the weight of each item is used to check if the corresponding item is identified correctly. The system relies on matching visual features from images stored in a database to match against features extracted from images taken by the visual sensors.

    • Embodiments of the present invention are directed to methods and system for conducting transactions for a self-checkout system. The self-checkout system may include at least two self-checkout stations and a single self-payment module for effecting payments and/or completing transactions conducted on each of the at least two self-checkout systems. Accordingly, a first signal may be received at a first time, where the first signal indicates that a first self-checkout station is ready to tender payment and complete a transaction conducted on the first self-checkout station. A second signal may be received at a second time, where the second signal indicates that a second self-checkout station is ready to tender payment and complete a transaction conducted on the second self-checkout station. The system may then determine a priority of completing a respective transaction of the first self-checkout system and the second self-checkout system based upon the earlier of the first time and the second time. The first or second self-checkout station may then be selected to complete the respective transaction based upon the determined priority.
