The banded regions may be solid or contain any number of cross-web and/or longitudinal discontinuities. The pattern may be configured so that when a smoking article is placed on a substrate, at least two longitudinal locations along the length of the tobacco rod have film-forming compound located only on sides of the smoking article not in contact with the substrate.

The banded regions (32) are spaced from each other by distance equal to the length of the tobacco rod of the smoking article divided by an integer. This results in banded regions which begin at substantially the same location on each cigarette. Each banded region is thus positioned at a preferred predetermined distance from the end of the cigarette; cigarettes made with such paper exhibit a consistent and improved ignition propensity compared with random or quasi-randomly positioned banded regions. Cigarettes made with the registrable banded wrapper are disclosed and methods of making cigarettes with the registrable banded paper are dislcosed.

The pattern is configured so that when a smoking article is placed on a substrate, at least two longitudinal locations along the length of the tobacco rod have film forming compound located only on sides of the smoking article not in contact with the substrate. At these longitudinal locations, the restricted airflow to the tobacco due to the presence of the substrate, in combination with the film-forming compound located at the sides is sufficient to cause the smoking article to self -extinguish. However, when the smoking article is held by a smoker, the presence of the film-forming compound does not necessarily by itself cause the smoking article to extinguish. A desirable self burn capability is therefore maintained.

摘要： A process for making patterned wrapper paper applies an aqueous solution of oxidized starch material to a base web (10) of paper. The aqueous starch solution has a surface tension of at least about 65 dynes/centimeter, a pH in the range of about 6 to about 6.5, a room temperature viscosity no greater than about 50 centipoises, and is prepared from particles sized in the range of about 4 to about 40 microns when dry and about 90% of which are sized in the range of about 10 to about 100 microns when wet. The starch particles are capable of forming a solution with about 20% to about 24% oxidized starch content. Any suitable printing technique can be used to apply the aqueous solution. The pattern of the wrapper may comprise bands (34), stripes (36), two-dimensional arrays, and the like. Moreover, the pattern can be applied in one or more layers (40,42). The invention includes a cigarette having the wrapper.
