    • The invention is related to a medical apparatus 1 for programming and/or monitoring an implantable medical device 8 over a radio-based wireless network comprising: a programmer or monitoring device 2 provided with input and/or output means for transmitting programming instructions and/or outputting monitoring information; at least two antenna devices 5a, 5b, ..., 5n operatively provided at different locations, wherein said programmer or monitoring device 2 is connected to said antenna devices 5a, 5b,...,5n and is provided for transmitting signals to and receiving signals from said implantable medical device 8 via either one of said antenna devices 5a, 5b,...,5n.     • The present invention relates to a method and system for establishing a wireless communication session between an implantable medical device IMD (302) and a home monitoring device (301) . A basic idea of the invention is to have a home monitoring device frequently send communication-initiating signals to an IMD arranged within the body of a patient for establishing a communication session between the monitoring device and the IMD. In order to save energy, RF telemetry circuitry of the IMD is normally set in a low-power, idle mode. Occasionally, the RF circuitry will leave the low-power mode and enter an active mode in which it is able to detect a communication-initiating signal transmitted by the monitoring device. When a communication-initiating signal is detected, the IMD will respond accordingly to the monitoring device and a communication session will be established. In the present invention, the telemetry circuitry of the IMD will be controlled to wake up from low-power mode and enter an active detection mode independently of the transmission of the communication- initiating signals from the monitoring device. Hence, the external monitoring device will frequently transmit communication-initiating signals, but the IMD will only detect a wake-up signal when leaving its low-power mode and entering active mode at a predetermined instant of time.

    • The invention relates to a method in a telemetry system for establishing a connection between a base station and an implantable medical device. The method comprises the steps of: starting, in the base station (4), a first timer (B-T 2 ); determining, in the base station (4), channels that are free for communication among a number of available channels, and selecting one of the free channels; starting, in the base station (4), a second timer (B-T 3 ); transmitting, as long as the first or second timer (B-T 2 ), (B-T 3 ) has not expired, a recognition message on the selected channel to the implantable medical device (3); and establishing, upon receipt of a recognition reply message from the implantable medical device (3), communication between the base station (4) and the implantable medical device (3) on the selected channel. The invention is readily adaptable for fulfilment of different requirements, such as stipulated by the ETSI standard.
