    • The invention discloses a method for marking and authenticating a security article, such as a banknote, a document, a ticket, a foil, a thread, a label, a card, or a commercial good, so as to provide for an easy authentication of said article by a machine, such as a currency acceptor, a ticket validator, or a hand-held authentication device. According to the disclosed method, the security article carries a marking in the form of a user-defined design, wherein said marking comprises dyes or pigments belonging to an extended, or hyperchromic color space which is not reproducible by commercially available, 4-color desktop reproduction equipment. The authentication of said marking includes the mathematical transformation of the crude spectral information to statistically independent hyper-color coordinates, and the comparison of selected hyper-color coordinates with corresponding reference values.

The process described herein comprises the step of a) applying on a substrate surface a radiation curable coating composition comprising platelet-shaped magnetic or magnetizable pigment particles, b) exposing the radiation curable coating composition to a dynamic magnetic field of a magnetic assembly comprising a Halbach cylinder assembly, and c) at least partially curing the radiation curable coating composition of step b) so as to fix the platelet-shaped magnetic or magnetizable pigment particles in their adopted positions and orientations, said step c) being carried out partially simultaneously or simultaneously with step b).

    • The present invention relates to the field of the protection of security documents and more particularly to a method and a device for determining the distribution and orientation of platelet-shaped pigment particles over an extended region of an optical effect layer (OEL). The method described herein comprises the steps of a) taking at least one image, under illumination of said extended region of the optical effect layer with collimated light incident from at least one first direction, of reflected light of said extended region of the optical effect layer from at least one second direction, using a telecentric lens-and-camera assembly having the optical axis of the telecentric lens oriented along said second direction, and b) processing the at least one image of said extended region to extract quantitative particle distribution and orientation information. The device described herein comprises a) a collimated light source for illuminating an extended region of the optical effect layer with collimated light from at least one first direction, and b) a telecentric lens-and-camera assembly for collecting the light reflected from said extended region of the optical effect layer into at least one second direction.

In particular, the invention relates to methods of making an optical effect layer (OEL) associated with a substrate, the method comprising i) providing a substrate associated with a coating composition comprising magnetic or magnetizable pigment particles; ii) providing a permanent magnet assembly producing a first magnetic field; iii) providing an electromagnet assembly including a winding assembly and drive producing an oscillating or rotating second magnetic field that interacts with the first magnetic field to spin the permanent magnet assembly to rotate the first magnetic field; and iv) applying the first magnetic field whilst the first magnetic field rotates by spinning of the permanent magnet assembly to aggregately orient the magnetic or magnetizable pigment particles to create the optical effect layer. The invention also relates to apparatuses for creating an OEL.
