    • A receiver unit includes a first buffer that receives and stores digitized samples at a particular sample rate and a data processor that retrieves segments of digitized samples from the first buffer and processes the retrieved segments with a particular set of parameters values. The data processor is operated based on a processing clock having a frequency that is (e.g., then or more times) higher than the sample rate. Multiple instances of the received signal can be processed by retrieving and processing multiple segments of digitized samples from the first buffer. the receiver unit typically further includes a receiver that receives and processes a transmitted signal to provide the digitized samples and a controller that dispatches tasks for the data processor. The data processor can be designed to include a correlator, a symbol demodulation and combiner, a first accumulator, and a second buffer, or a combination thereof. The correlator despreads the retrieved segments of digitized samples with corresponding segments of PN despreading sequences to provide correlated samples, which are further processed by the symbol demodulation and combiner to provide processed symbols. The second buffer stores the processed symbols, and can be designed to provide de-interleaving of the processed symbols.

    • A mobile station (5) is in communication with an origination base station (10) at a first frequency, f1. It is directed to search for pilot signals from a destination base station (20, 22), in preparation for a hard handoff to it, and to then return to the first frequency. The destination base station (20, 22) operates at a second frequency, f2. The mobile station (5) captures a brief sample of signals at the second frequency, and quickly returns to the first frequency. The sample is searched to determine if a handoff is possible. The search takes place, at least in part, after return to the first frequency. The quickness of return is rewarded with a reduction in erasures, which inevitably occur when the mobile station (5) is off the first frequency. The prior art waited until the search was complete before returning to the first frequency. It therefore suffered unnecessary erasures.

    • A method and apparatus for tracking signals in a wireless communication system (10). In one embodiment, a base station (12) includes a rake antenna (20, 22) having multiple fingers. When any of the fingers goes out of lock, the base station waits a predetermined time period (40) and then adjusts the lock detect filter (30). The adjustment is based on comparison (34) of received signal energy to an adjusted energy threshold (38). The comparison may result in an increased energy level of the filter. In one embodiment, if a mobile station is in soft hand-off (104), the base station ignores the lock state of the fingers (108) and transmits power control information based on the received signal energy (110). If the mobile station is not in soft hand-off a predetermined power control pattern is applied for gradual power adjustment (106).
