    • The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for controlling at least one readout parameter during a reading operation from a magneto-optical recording medium comprising a storage layer and a readout layer, wherein an expanded domain leading to a pulse in a reading signal is generated in said readout layer by copying of a mark region from said storage layer to said readout layer upon heating by the radiation power and with the help of the external magnetic field. A pulse pattern in the reading signal is analyzed, and the analysis result is compared with a runlength characteristic of the data stored in said storage layer. A relative occurrence of runlength violations is obtained from this comparison, and an error signal is generated having a predetermined continuous functional relationship with said determined relative occurrence. The at least one readout parameter is controlled on the basis of generated error signal. This makes the error signal dependent on the relative occurrence of detected runlength violations, such that a smooth transition from the non-controlled state to the controlled state can be achieved so as to increase the robustness of the control loop.

    • The invention relates to a patterned light emitting diode device (10, 12) which comprises a layer of light emitting material (20) and comprising a light-reflective layer (32) being visible through a light-emission window (64) of the patterned light emitting diode device. The light-reflective layer comprising a pattern (45) constituted of local deformations (40A, 40B, 42A, 42B) of the light-reflective layer. The pattern may be generated via impinging condensed light beam (70, 72) which may enter via a rear- wall 33 of the light-reflective layer, or via impinging the condensed light beam through the light-emission window on the light-reflective layer. The deformations are preferably generated without altering the conductivity of the light-reflective layer too much. An effect of this patterned light emitting diode device is that the pattern remains clearly visible both during an on-state and during an off- state of the light emitting diode device. Furthermore, the light-reflective layer may preferably be the anode layer 32 or the cathode layer 30 of the light emitting diode device. As such, by maintaining the conductivity of the light-reflective layer, substantially any pattern may be generated while the patterned light emitting diode device still, in operation, emits light from the whole light emitting material.

    • An optical disc reading apparatus, such as a Near Filed optical disc reading apparatus, comprises a disc reader (401) which generates a first signal by reading an optical disc (403). A bit detector (407) detects data values in response to the first signal. The detected data is fed to an error correction processor (407) which performs error correction on the stream of detected data. In addition, the reading apparatus comprises an error signal processor (411) which generates a reading head position error signal. The error signal may for example be indicative of an air gap error or a tracking error for the reading lens. The error signal is fed to a reliability processor (413) which sets reliability values of at least some of the detected data in response to the head position error signal. The error correction performed by the error correcting processor (407) then performs the error correction taking the reliability values into account. The invention may allow improved error correction performance.

A bit detector (407) detects data values in response to the first signal and data reference signals which are indicative of expected signals for different data sequences. An air gap processor (415) generates a reading head position error signal indicative of a distance between the surface of the optical disc and a reading leans. A reference processor (409) modifies the data reference signals in response to the reading head position error signal. • The present invention relates to magneto-optical recording technique by which an improved domain expansion reading is achieved. A mark region is recorded as a sub-mark portion and an adjacent sub-space portion, wherein the sum of said predetermined first and second lengths is changed in dependence said pattern of marks and spaces. The proposed write strategy allows to write a long run length with sub-mark and/or sub-space lengths selected independent of the channel bit length, such that a long run length can be written with few well-chosen domains with a stray field larger than the minimum field for MAMMOS readout. In this way, differences in readout conditions for all combinations of short and long run lengths can be eliminated, resulting in substantially improved power margins for random data.
