    • A two-step method and apparatus for controlling cracking severity in the effluent from a cracking furnace such as an ethylene cracker. The method includes two steps. The first step consists of determining the near infrared spectrum of effluent in-line. The second step consists of changing the temperature or a combination thereof residence time of the furnace according to the determination of the first step. The apparatus includes a light source mounted on a conduit for the effluent, a light detector mounted on the opposite side of the conduit from the light source to receive light emitted from the light source, means for sheltering the light source from the effluent, means for sheltering the light detector from the effluent, means for flowing a fluid past the light source at a higher pressure than the pressure of the effluent; and means for flowing a fluid past the light detector at a higher pressure than the pressure of the effluent.

    • Described is a process for preparing dihydroxy stilbene compounds which includes the steps of: (a) combining (i) at least one coumpound containing one phenolic hydroxyl group per molecule with (ii) a Lewis acid which may be mixed with the compound at a temperature above the melting point temperatures of (i) and (ii) to form a solution of (i) in (ii), which will remain in liquid form when the temperature of the solution is brought to a temperature in the range of from -30 DEG C to 10 DEG C, wherein (i) and (ii) were combined in amounts sufficient to provide a mole ratio of (ii):(i) of at least 0.3:1.0; (b) contacting (iii) at least one alpha-haloketone compound or the corresponding ketal or hemiketal, or at least one alpha-haloaldehyde compound or the corresponding acetal or hemiacetal with the solution obtained from step (a) under reaction conditions sufficient to form the corresponding halogen-containing bisphenol compound, wherein (iii) is employed in an amount of at least 10 mole percent of the molar amount of (i) present in the solution obtained from step (a); and (c) dehydrohalogenating the halogen-containing bisphenol compound under reaction conditions sufficient to form the corresponding dihydroxy stilbene compound. It has been discovered that the Lewis acid provides an effective solvent for the reaction between (i) and (ii) in step (a), thereby reducing or eliminating the need for using inert reaction solvents. A substantial absence of inert solvents in the reaction mixture results in a process that is relatively fast and selective to the desired product.

    • A process for reducing emissions of dioxins and furans in a stack gas from the incineration of organic materials, comprising: incinerating the organic material; adding one or more dioxine-reactive materials which are deposited on the flyash or on a supplemental particulate support optionally added upstream of an apparatus for removing flyash from the gaseous products of incineration prior to their emission in a stack gas, and which under the conditions prevailing in the apparatus will react with the dioxins in and from said gaseous products from said incineration step to produce one or more corresponding dioxin-derivative materials which are preferably substantially retained on the flyash or supplemental particulate support or both through the incinerator and which are periodically or continuously removed with said flyash and supplemental particulate support from the flyash/particulate removal apparatus, or in the alternative, adding the one or more dioxin-reactive materials via the addition of a particulate material including the one or more dioxin-reactive materials therein or thereon upstream of the flyash removal apparatus; and, maintaining the one or more dioxin-reactive materials in contact with the dioxins in sufficient concentrations and for a sufficient time to reduce the concentration of dioxins in and from said gaseous products through the formation of said dioxin-derivative materials.

    • The invention relates to a poly(arylamine) composition of one or more compounds of from 5 to 1000 of monomer. The monomers useful in the preparation of poly(arylamines) comprise two amino moieties wherein each amino moiety is bound to three aryl moieties wherein two halo moieties are optionally bound to the monomer. The invention further relates to films prepared from such poly(arylamines), as well as electrophotographic devices and electroluminescent devices containing such films, such as polymeric light-emitting diodes. The invention also relates to processes for the preparation of poly(arylamines). The polymers of the invention form films which are relatively high molecular weight charge transport compounds which are capable of forming films. The films can be prepared using relatively small amounts of polymer while still maintaining the desirable properties of transporting positive charges. The processes disclosed herein provide efficient means of preparing the disclosed compounds.
