    • A golf club head (10) is provided having a substantially increased sweet spot across its club face 20). A preferred construction includes an annular area (41) on a rear surface (23) having increased thickness surrounding a central region with a balance point (38) of the club face (20). The central region of the face (20) has a generally reduced thickness that is less than the maximum of the annular area but greater than a minimum thickness at the peripheral area. The face material may be metallic, but in alternative embodiments the effective bending stiffness profiles represented by this annular area may be achieved by appropriate use of composites, for example. Methods for manufacturing a golf club head (10) having a face (20) with the bending stiffness profiles of the present invention include forging or machining techniques as well as laser deposition and inertia welding.

    • An improved face (30) for a golf club head (10) includes shallow (16) and deep markings (13) configured to provide a pleasing appearance when viewed head on, and to frame the central region (18) of the impact face surface (20) of the face (30) when viewed at address. Use of only shallow markings (16) in the central region (18) of the impact surface (20) prevents existence of stress fractures resulting from use of deep markings in the central region (18). This allows for a face thinner than those incorporating conventional grooves in the central regions (18) of their impact surfaces (20), resulting in both superior resistance to cracking and improved C.O.R. Specified methods of manufacture are particularly suited for making clubs incorporating these shallow (16) and deep markings (13).
