    • The cutting machine comprises at least one path for the products to be cut (L); at least one device (3, 5, 9) for feed of the products along said path, according to a direction of feed (fL); an element (17) rotating around a main axis of rotation (A-A); on said rotating element, at least one disk-shaped blade (19A, 19B, 19C) rotating around its own axis of rotation (B-B), said blade being provided with alternate translatory motion, substantially parallel to the direction of feed. The disk-shaped blades moves axially in relation to the rotating element during rotation of said rotating element. Moreover, the translatory movement of the disk-shaped blade is controlled so that it moves in the same direction as the direction of feed of the products to be cut when the blade is engaged in said products to follow the feed of the products during cutting. Motion in the opposite direction to the direction of feed of the products is imparted on the blade in a period of time in which the blade is disengaged from said products.

    • A cigarette manufacturing apparatus comprises a tobacco rod maker for making double length tobacco rods, a tipper for applying filters to tobacco rods to form filter tipped cigarettes, and a transfer apparatus for transferring double length tobacco rods from the rod maker to the tipper. Each of the tipper and the rod maker comprises a plurality of field devices for monitoring and/or affecting parameters of the rod maker, the tipper or the cigarettes being manufactured. A motion controller controls a plurality of synchronised motors. A PC based controller controls the motion controller, the devices on the tipper and the rod maker and communicates with an HMI which is running on the same or a separate PC. The devices and the controller are linked by a field bus. The HMI PC and the motion controller are connected to the system controller either over their own links or via the fieldbus.

    • An optical inspection system mounts on a cigarette making machine (200) or like system, and detects the presence of bands (5) having irregular widths or spacings. In response to the detection of irregular bands (5) the optical inspection system instructs the cigarette making machine (200) to reject cigarettes which will be subsequently made from portions of the cigarette paper containing the irregular bands. The optical inspection system includes a sensor (210) which can accommodate different types of cigarette paper, and band material having varying reflectance properties. In operation, sensor circuitry detects the range of voltages produced by a sensor detector (210), and formulates a peak value (or average peak value) for the range of voltages. The circuitry then takes a percentage of this peak value to form a threshold value. This threshold value is compared with the AC signal from the sensor detector (210). If the AC signal exceeds the threshold, then the circuitry asserts a signal to indicate that a band is present. The output of the sensor is fed to a computer (212). The computer detects whether the bands detected by the sensor (210) have regular band spacing and width.
