    • A dimmer applies a phase-controlled AC voltage to a lighting assembly which includes a fluorescent lamp operated with a magnetic ballast. A microprocessor performs a calibration routine in which the phase angle used in phase control is increment from 0 toward 180 degrees. The microprocessor monitors current conducted by the lighting assembly in response to each incrementing, effectively determining an operative range of phase angles free of flickering or drop-out. During steady-state operation, the microprocessor converts nominal power settings into corresponding phase angle settings within the operative range, preventing operation in undesirable states.

    • A phase control circuit (10) is configured for connection between an AC source (12) and an AC load (14). The AC source (12) supplies an AC drive signal having a plurality of sequential positive and negative half cycles. The phase control circuit (10) comprises first and second power switches (50, 52) coupled between the AC source (12) and the AC load (14). The first power switch (50) conducts current of the AC drive signal after a first phase delay during the positive half cycles. The second power switch (52) conducts current of the AC drive signal after a second phase delay during the negative half cycles. A feedback balance circuit (58, 59) is coupled between the AC load (14) and the first and second power switches (50, 52). The feedback balance circuit (58, 59) determines a DC current component in the AC load (14) and generates a phase delay correction signal as a function of the DC current component. At least one of the first and second phase delays is adjusted independently of the other phase delay as a function of the phase delay correction signal to limit the DC current component.

The chopper control circuit (130) checks the current detected by a current detector (110) and outputs a current control signal to a gate terminal (41) of the chopper circuit (40) so that the output current may coincide with the set current value. Accordingly, the power supplied from the inverter circuit (70) to the discharge lamp (100) is controlled by the chopper circuit (40).
