    • The invention relates to a discharge lamp equipped with a gastight discharge vessel that contains a filling that comprises a gas, that is transmissive for at least part of the electromagnetic radiation that is generated by the filling during operation and is equipped with lamp electrodes between which a discharge is maintained during operation. In accordance with the invention the discharge lamp comprises a piezotransformer and at least one of the lamp electrodes comprises a secondary side of the piezotransformer. Since the piezotransformer functions as a lamp electrode, as a ballast choke and as a transformer, the discharge lamp can be operated by means of a relatively simple and cheap ballast circuit.

    • The invention relates to a circuit arrangement for operating a lamp comprising: circuit input terminals for connection to a supply voltage source; an inverter coupled to said circuit input terminals for generating an AC voltage with a frequency f out of a supply voltage supplied by the supply voltage source and equipped with inverter output terminals; a piezotransformer comprising transformer input terminals, coupled to the inverter output terminals, and transformer output terminals; terminals for lamp connection coupled to the inverter output terminals; a detector for detecting whether the lamp has ignited. In accordance to the invention the transformer input terminals are connected to the inverter output terminals only by means of passive components and in that the inverter comprises means coupled to the detector for changing the frequency f in response to the ignition of the lamp. As a result the circuit arrangement is simple and inexpensive and need not comprise means for switching the piezotransformer out of the circuit after ignition of the lamp.

    • The invention relates to a method for producing series of impulse voltages to operate discharge lamps (8) by means of pulsed, dielectrically impeded discharge. According to said method, the series of impulse voltages consists of two series of partial voltages so that the total peak values of each series of partial voltages is lower than the total peak values of the resulting series of impulse voltage e.g. half as big. One advantage is that correspondingly lower EMI arises when the series of partial voltages are produced. Also both series of partial voltages have opposite inclined rising edges in relation to a reference potential. Preferably, both series of partial voltages are inverted. This provides ideal and full compensation, at least locally, of electromagnetic interference (EMI) produced by both series of partial voltages. A circuit thus includes two series connected impulse circuits (1; 2) which are synchronised using a timing circuit (3).
