    • In a machine which is provided with a stator (5) and an opposite rotor (3), a sensor (10) of magnetic type, arranged in the stator, for determining the distance between the stator and the rotor can be calibrated by the sensor first being moved relative to the stator into contact with the rotor for zeroing. The sensor is then reversed a predetermined distance, after which the sensor signal can be used for determining the distance (6) between the stator (5) and the rotor (3). In an arrangement suitable for the purpose, the stator (5) has at least one sensor (10) of magnetic type, which is intended to interact with an opposite surface on the rotor (3). The sensor (10) is mounted displaceably in the axial direction of the rotor and can be brought into contact with the rotor (3).

    • A refiner for refining lignocellulosic material having opposed, relatively rotating, rotor and stator refiner plates. The refiner plates each have radially inner and outer edges and an inlet zone extending radially outward from the inner edge. The inlet zone of each refiner plates has a radially inner portion and a radially outer portion. The inner portion of the rotor plate includes a plurality of breaker bars which curve in a direction which is opposite to the direction of rotation of the rotor plate and which extend to a height substantially equal to one-half of the refining gap. The outer portion of the inlet zone of the stator plate has a plurality of dams. Each of the dams has an upper ramp surface extending to an outer end having a curved profile. The outer portion of the inlet zone of the rotor plate and the inner portion of the inlet zone of the stator plate may each have either a smooth surface or a plurality of outwardly extending low profile protrusions.

    • A rotary disc refiner includes a pair of spaced apart refiner discs (11, 12) for refining or grinding a material that typically is fibrous material such as wood pulp or the like. Pressurized vapor, typically steam, produced as a result of the refining or grinding is exhausted through a channel (22) in the refiner disc which extends through the body of the disc. Preferably, the channel is located in a refiner disc that rotates. The channel includes a vapor inlet opening located preferably in the high pressure midsection of the refiner disc, a vapor outlet opening which discharges the steam to the relatively low pressure outer section of the disc, and a passageway behind the refining or grinding surface of the refiner disc connecting the inlet to the outlet.
