The movements of the abutter (A) and object are controlled by detecting the mutual collision of them, and the visual sense of distance of a three-dimensional space is imitated by using a two-dimensional still picture.

    • A method for generating images that appear as complex three-dimensional surfaces when viewed using a stereoscopic viewing system, using only a minimum amount of data to define the images. The stereo contours of a complex three-dimensional surface are drawn using a three-dimensional computer drawing system and three-axis input device. The drawing is viewed with a stereoscopic viewing system using, e.g., a CRT where the left and right eye images are time multiplexed in sequential fields and liquid crystal shutter glasses synchronized with the CRT display. Simply by drawing closed loops in space, filling the closed loops with color, and drawing a minimum number of other stereo contours, an image is created which appears to define a complex three-dimensional surface. The image creates a mental perception of a complete solid object by providing to the observer's eye only the minimum cues required by the brain to create stereo objects with complex surfaces, taking advantage of the stage of human neural processing in which the images the eye sees are coded into similar stereo cues. The normal image processing of the brain is in effect substituted for the complex mathematical processing of prior systems to create objects perceived as having three-dimensional volume and surfaces. Therefore, the tedious design and computations required by present systems to produce a full computer graphics description of the object are eliminated, thereby substantially reducing the time required to draw three-dimensional objects as well as the processing requirements where the images are processed by computers, thus making it possible for artists to create three-dimensional images as simply and intuitively as two-dimensional images have historically been created on two-dimensional surfaces.

    • A method and apparatus for making autostereographic images (115, 116) wherein a computer (105) is provided with a number of planar images in a digital form (101, 102), in a two-dimensional array of columns and rows of digital data. The columns are interleaved and rotated to form an interleaved and rotated image so that the interleaved columns of the rotated image are substantially unaligned with the rows and columns of the digital representation of this image. The digital representation of the image is rotated using an algorithm that is independent of resolution and number of input images. The resulting image is then output on a high resolution imaging device (106, 107) so that the columns of interleaving are substantially unaligned with both the direction of printing and the normal to direction of printing. The output from the high resolution imaging device (106, 107) is then placed in a registered relationship with a means for viewing (113, 114) selected ones of the input images, such as a lenticular or barrier screen.

    • The present invention relates to a method for making stereograms and to stereograms so produced. Stereograms are designs or illustrations which initially appear to be two-dimensional, but, upon appropriate inspection, give the illusion of having three-dimensional shapes and forms embedded within. The stereograms produced by the present invention can be viewed without using lenses or other aids. Stereograms are produced from two elements: color information and depth information. The color information is used to create the two-dimensional bash art in which the three-dimensional image is embedded. The depth information is used to determine the amount by which the embedded images are raised and/or lowered in the three-dimensional effect. The present invention relates to a procedure by which color information inputted for the creation of a stereogram can be aligned with the depth information inputted for the embedded three-dimensional image in the stereogram. As a result, the three-dimensional shape embedded within the stereogram appears in realistic color. Such color can be made to align with the full embedded three-dimensional image (within certain limitations discussed below), or with a portion of the embedded three-dimensional image.
