    • An energy storage and conversion apparatus (1) comprising a containment (6) defining a vacuum chamber (9), a stator (2) within the chamber (9) and a rotor (3) around the stator (2) which, in use, is driven by the stator (2) to store energy as kinetic energy of the rotor (3) and acts with the stator (2) as a generator to release energy, wherein a rotor includes a flux shield (20) to reduce energy losses occurring due to flux (10) in the rotor (3) interacting with the containment (6) during use. By reducing the amount of flux passing from the rotor (3) to the containment (6), interactive forces are reduced thereby reducing energy losses and increasing the efficiency of the energy storage and conversion apparatus (1).

    • A drum (1) for the sealed containment and storage of radioactive material, e.g. UO3 powder, has a top portion which comprises a sealable filling neck (17), through which material to be contained may be applied, and a collar (23) provided around the filling neck, the collar having an engagement means which allows the drum to be picked up by a lifting means. The said engagement means comprises an inward facing rim or lip (25) on the collar (23), the underside of which rim or lip provides an annular surface against which a single, multiple or annular lifting means (63) can be engaged to provide a lifting action. The collar (23) may project upwardly from a region at or adjacent to the periphery of the drum (1) top portion, the collar having in cross section an inward sloping portion (23a) between the region where the collar is attached to the top portion of the drum and the rim or lip. The drum may have a body inside which material is to be contained and stored and, provided beneath the base of the body, a downwardly projecting ring or skirt (11) which provides a cylindrical space beneath the base of the body, the cylindrical space having a size such that the collar on the top portion of an identical drum fits closely inside the ring or skirt to occupy at least part of the said cylindrical space.

    • An overpack (40) for a drum (D) containing radioactive material, e.g. uranium trioxide, comprises a lightweight, porous, insulating packing material having a shape adapted to be fitted all around the drum (D) to be packed thereby, the packing material being contained in an outer container (40) which has folds or swages (49) to provide enhanced radial stiffness or strength. One or more plugs (53) may be fitted in the container at one or more of the folds to permit venting to the outside atmosphere of gases inside the container at a predetermined temperature or pressure. The packing material may comprise a hollow body (42) of packing material and a lid (43) of packing material. The body and the lid may have chamfered mating surfaces (58) to minimise loss of heat insulation.

    • A storage system for drums (2) containing hazardous material, such as radioactive waste, comprises a plurality of stillages (1) arranged in a vertical stack. Each stillage (1) accommodates a plurality of drums (2) and is a fabricated metal structure comprising a rectangular planar base (3) having a post (7, 8, 9, 10) extending upwardly from each corner. Each post is hollow and is provided with a support pad (27, 29, 30, 31) at an end remote from the base (3). The support pads lie in a plane substantially parallel to the base. Upper and lower tie plates (35, 36, 43) extend between the four posts to define a perimeter around the stillage. Internal partition plates (38) are provided to form a plurality of compartments for receiving the drums (2), the inner ends of the partition plates (38) being attached to a central ring (40). The stillages (1) can be arranged in a free-standing stack with the base of an upper stillage resting on the support pads of a stillage beneath it. Such a stack is able to withstand loads resulting from seismic events.
