    • This invention is an improved intraurethral bladder control apparatus including housing device (12, 15) having a fluid flow path therethrough, valve means mounted within the fluid valve path and normally bias closed, the valving responsive to pressure from fluid within the bladder of the patient for opening to allow fluid flow from the bladder through the apparatus of this invention and out of the urethra. A pair of retaining devices (30, 35) are connected to each of the distal and proximal ends of the intra-urethral bladder control apparatus. The retainer (30) at the distal end of the apparatus preferably comprises a leaf spring having a plurality of leaves, in the preferred embodiment described herein the plurality comprising four leaves, with a safety device (31) connected to the tip of each leaf to inhibit piercing of the bladder wall when the leaves of the distal end retainer automatically open within the bladder of the patient after placement of the intra-urethral bladder control apparatus.

    • An endoscopic surgical instrument (201) includes a housing (210), a single access conduit (212) formed in the housing (210), an irrigation port, and an evacuation port, each port being connected through independent valves to the single access conduit (212). The single access conduit (212) has a first end and a second end which is terminated in an aperture formed in the housing (210). A closure is provided for the aperture. A viewing device, such as an endoscope, is insertable through the aperture and the single access conduit (212), and is extended slightly beyond the first end. An electrode assembly (202) having two or more retractable RF electrodes spaced a predetermined distance and angle apart, is also insertable through the aperture and the single access conduit (212), and is extendable beyond the first end. Each RF electrode is in electrical communication with a means for supplying RF energy and for continuously measuring impedance across the electrodes.

    • This invention features a urinary occlusion device (20a) having a body member (22) a portion of which is reconfigurable, where the reconfigurable portion (26) improves the sealing and retaining capability of the occlusion device (20a). In one embodiment, the reconfigurable portion (26) furthers engagement between the reconfigurable portion (26) and the urethra and/or bladder neck after insertion. This reconfigurable portion (26) is responsive to the pressure of accumulating urine by expanding outwardly to further engage the urethra and/or bladder neck. In another embodiment, adhesive is applied to the reconfigurable portion (26) and the reconfigurable portion (26) is configured so the adhesive contacts the urethra and/or bladder neck after insertion. In preferred embodiments, the occlusion device further includes a plate (24) member that assists in anchoring the device while preventing migration of the device into the bladder. A therapeutic compound also may be applied to the device. Also featured is a method for controlling urinary incontinence using such a device.
