    • An extrusion head capable of achieving a great increase in production speed as compared with a conventional head for extruding a highly viscous molten coating composition.     • A cross-head die (20) which is comprised of a die body (25) with a flow chamber (38), a plurality of die cavities (30), die elements (48) within the die cavities (30), communication between the die cavities (30) and the flow chamber (38), a means for individual flow adjustment to each die cavity (30), and a means for axial motion of the filamentary members (14) through the die elements (48). The single flow chamber (38) communicates to a plurality of die cavities (30) through individual radial flow ports (40). The flow chamber (38) is open at one end (27) and closed (28) at the other except for a cleaning hole (23). Within each of the radial flow ports (40) resides a device for adjusting flow restriction. Within each die cavity (30) is a cylindrical die piston (32). A gap created between the die piston (32) and the die cavity (30) defines a path for resin flow. The resin flow path is tapered to a point at which the filamentary member (14) exits from a smaller cylindrical hole (34) through the center of the die piston (32). The resin is deposited on the filamentary member (14) as it moves through the die piston (32) to produce a composite matrix strand.

    • Dies which facilitate the threading of a strand are disclosed. Each die embodiment includes portions that move relative to each other to allow access to the area between the portions. One embodiment of a die embodying the principles of the invention includes an upper portion (110) and a lower portion (112). Each die portion includes components corresponding to substantially half of a wirecoating die. Accordingly, when the die portions are adjacent each other, they form a complete wirecoating die. In the preferred embodiment, the upper portion is moveable relative to the lower portion, which is fixed. Each portion is coupled to a support (190) by a conduit (192, 194) through which resin (114) can be supplied to the particular die portion. The upper portion is pivotally mounted to the support for movement between an upper position in which the die is open and a lower position in which the die is closed. This die is used in an in-line wirecoating process in which a strand (22) is wirecoated downstream from a bushing (10) during a fiber forming process. Another embodiment of a die embodying the principles of the invention is a sealable-slot die. This die embodiment includes a body (210) and a nozzle (230) disposed in the body. The nozzle and the die body have slots (242, 226) which are in fluidic communication with the exterior of the die. The slots are sized to permit a strand to be thread through them and into the interior of the nozzle. A plate (260) with an extension (262) is placed on the die so that the extension seals the slots after a strand is thread in the die. This die is typically used in a low pressure system, such as a string binder wirecoating process.

    • An apparatus for continuously coating aligned cords (10) having knots or other enlarged irregularities therein. A cord-alignment baffle means (58) of novel construction located at the cord entrance (16) of an extrusion coating die assembly (14) enables passage of splices such as knots. The baffle means (58) comprises a plurality of cord-alignment apertures (68), each of which comprises a guide position (70) and an enlarged knot-passing position (72). During operation of the coating process, cords (10) are maintained in alignment as they pass through the die (14), and intermittent knots pass through the enlarged knot-passing positions (72) of the alignment apertures (68).
