    • Surgical techniques and instruments are provided for preparing a disc space for implantation of a vertebral fusion device or implant. In accordance with one embodiment of the technique, a surgical instrument assembly (40) is provided having an outer sleeve (50) with distraction fingers (58) at one end to maintain distraction of a disc space. A switching sleeve (100) having a pair of rotatable distractors (108) is coupled within the outer sleeve (50), and the sleeves are placed over a dilator (150) until the distractor heads (110) are placed within the disc space. The dilator (150) is withdrawn and the disc space distracted by rotating the distractors (108) of the switching sleeve (100). The switching sleeve (100) is uncoupled from the outer sleeve (50) and the fingers (58) of the outer sleeve (50) are then inserted into the disc space. The switching sleeve (100) and dilator (150) are then removed and the outer sleeve (50) defines a channel therethrough that allows insertion of implants at bilateral locations within the disc space without movement or manipulation of the outer sleeve (50). Laparoscopic procedures may be performed in the disc space by placing a sealing member (180) over the end of the outer sleeve (50) after it is inserted into the disc space.

    • The present invention provides a dynamic stabilization device positionable about a portion of a spinal column. The stabilization device may generally include a first component and a second component, where the first and second components are movably coupled to one another to define an arcuate path of motion. The stabilization device may also include one or more adjustment elements positionable within first and second adjustment openings to affect the path of motion between the first and second components and/or the behavior and characteristics of the movement. In addition, one or more resistive elements may be adjustably positionable within either and/or both of the first and second adjustment openings to provide resistance and/or dampening of the forces experienced as the first and second components move relative to one another. The stabilization device may further define a joint having three degrees of freedom to adapt to movement of a spinal column.

    • Device for the osteosynthesis of a spinal segment by the anterior route, characterized in that it comprises at least two bone anchorage elements (1) for anchorage in the vertebral bodies (L2, L3...) by the anterior route, a frame (5) comprising a rod (6) adapted to be received in the bone anchorage elements, a plate (7) disposed roughly parallel to the rod and rigidly connected to the latter to form a closed frame. Means (4, 3) are provided for clamping the rod in the anchorage elements so as to fix the latter at a predetermined distance apart, and screws (16) extend through openings (9) in the plate which are so profiled that the screwing of the screws (16) in the vertebrae automatically brings the two adjacent vertebrae closer together and thus achieves a compression of an intervertebral filler (G) replacing a vertebral disk. The association of a plate (7) and a rod (6) in the form of a frame affords the advantage of providing four vertebral anchorage points instead of only two in devices of the prior art, which prevents any offsetting of one vertebra (L2 or L3) relative to the other.
