    • A variable geometry turbine comprising an annular inlet surrounding a turbine wheel mounted for rotation about a turbine axis within a turbine chamber defined by a housing. The chamber has an annular inlet defined between inboard and outboard inlet side walls and surrounding the turbine wheel. The annular inlet includes: a first pair of first and second circumferentially spaced inlet passages; and a second pair of third and fourth circumferencially spaced inlet passages. The second pair of inlet passages is axially displaced from the first pair of inlet passages and a cylindrical sleeve is supported within the housing for reciprocal motion in an axial direction to vary the size of the annular inlet. The sleeve is movable between at least a first position in which each of the first pair of inlet passages is at least partially open to gas flow, and the second pair of inlet passages are fully open to gas flow, and a second position in which the first pair of inlet passages are fully blocked to the gas flow and each of the second pair or inlet passages is at least partial!/ blocked to gas flow.

    • A variable geometry turbine comprising: a turbine wheel mounted for rotation about a turbine axis within a housing. The housing defines an annular inlet surrounding the turbine wheel and defined between first and second inlet sidewalls. A cylindrical sleeve is axially movable across the annular inlet to vary the size of a gas flow path through the inlet. The annular inlet is divided into axially adjacent annular portions by at least one annular baffle which is axially spaced from the first and second inlet sidewalls. Inlet vanes extend axially across at least two of said annular portions defined by the or each baffle so as to divide said annular inlet into at least two axially offset inlet passages. The configuration of the inlet vanes extending into one of the inlet portions differs from the configuration of the inlet vanes extending into another of the inlet portions and the inner diameter of the sleeve is greater than the outer diameter of the inlet passages.

    • The turbine arrangement includes a turbine including a turbine housing which defines a turbine cavity within which a turbine wheel is supported for rotation, a turbine inlet upstream of the turbine wheel and a turbine outlet downstream of the turbine wheel. The turbine arrangement also includes a flow passage between a location upstream of the turbine wheel and a location downstream of the turbine wheel configured to permit gas flow said location upstream of the turbine wheel to said location downstream of the turbine wheel without interacting with the turbine wheel. The turbine arrangement also includes a valve arrangement comprising: a valve member moveable between open and closed configurations, wherein in the open configuration gas may flow from said location upstream of the turbine wheel to said location downstream of the turbine wheel through the flow passage, and in the closed configuration gas is substantially prevented from flowing through the flow passage; a first actuator portion connectable to an actuator for moving the valve member between the open and closed configurations; and a second actuator portion in gas flow communication with a portion of the turbine arrangement upstream of the turbine wheel via an actuator gas passage; and wherein the turbine arrangement is configured such that gas may flow said portion of the turbine arrangement upstream of the turbine wheel through the actuator gas passage to the second actuator portion, such that the pressure of said gas which flows through the actuator gas passage to the second actuator portion acts on the second actuator portion to urge the valve member towards the closed configuration.
