    • The present disclosure is directed to an apparatus for receiving broadcast signals with a headphone antenna. The apparatus comprising a broadcast signal receiver (120), including a tuner and a demodulator, the broadcast signal receiver (120) having input (125) and output (127; 129) points, the input point (125) receiving over-the-air broadcast RF signals and the output point (127; 129) providing an audio output signal; a connector (110) having first (115) and second (111; 112) contacts, the first contact (115) coupled between an antenna external to the apparatus and the input point (125) operative to provide the over-the-air broadcast RF signals for the receiver (120), the first contact (115) being a sole point internal to the apparatus providing the over-the-air broadcast RF signals for the receiver (120), the connector (110) operative to provide an audio signal for an external audio sound reproduction device via the second contact (111; 112); an audio speaker (160; 165) internal to the apparatus operative to reproduce an acoustic audio sound from the audio output signal; and a signal selector (1080, 1090, 1091, 1110; 1113, 1115, 1117, 1119) coupled between the output point (127; 129) of the receiver (120) and the second contact (111; 112) of the connector (110) and the audio speaker (160; 165) operative to provide the audio output signal selectively for one of the external audio sound reproduction device and the audio speaker (160; 165) in response to a selection made by a user, wherein the connector (110) includes a switching structure automatically selecting the external audio reproduction device for the audio output signal when the antenna is connected to the connector, and the signal selector (1080, 1090, 1091, 1110; 1113, 1115, 1117, 1119) overrides the automatic selection of the external audio reproduction device in response to user's selection of the audio speaker (160; 165).

    • A proposal for a DVB-C2 baseline system, mainly focused on the channel coding and bit interleaving modules for spectrally efficient modulation is described. Due to the implementation simplicity of the low density parity check (LDPC) codes standardized in the DVB-S2 specification, it is proposed to extend their application to cable channels and choose the subset with long block length ( L = 64800 ) and medium to high rates ( 2/5 ≤ R ≤ 9/10 ) as the forward error correction (FEC) codes of DVB-C2 systems. Due to the non-uniform bitwise error protection inherent to high-order modulations (e.g. 256-QAM, 1024-QAM) and irregular LDPC codes (e.g. DVB-S2 codes), there exists a mismatch between the modulation and the channel coding in general if the two modules are developed independently but concatenated directly. To match the error resilience of a finite-length channel code and a given constellation, the principles described herein design a bit interleaver and insert it between the channel encoder and the modulator. As a result, a better tradeoff between bandwidth-efficiency and power-efficiency can be achieved with a minor increase of hardware complexity.

    • A method and apparatus for identifying valid multipath energy peaks are described including locating an energy peak in a profile of energy peaks, categorizing the located energy peak based on a plurality of thresholds and processing energy peaks in at least one of the categories of located energy peaks. The method and apparatus further includes removing a direct current value component from each value in the profile of energy peaks, calculating a noise floor for a multipath searching window and determining a first threshold and a second threshold. The step and means for categorizing further includes determining if the located energy peak exceeds the first threshold, labeling the located energy peak as a false alarm, if the located energy peak does not exceed the first threshold, determining if the located energy peak exceeds the second threshold and labeling the located energy peak as confident, if the located energy peak exceeds the second threshold.

    • A satellite television ground system, particularly for a make or break satellite television signal system, includes an outdoor unit and an indoor unit that are in communication with each other via a single coaxial cable and an optional separate single conductor for power. The satellite television ground system is operative to measure and reverse frequency conversion errors utilizing DSP techniques, allowing for more precise generation and transmission of uplink signals from the satellite television ground system. Control data for the system is sent via a low data rate connection on a power cable thereof, or by a narrowband signaling channel via a coax cable. The system also utilizes a single reference oscillator to drive the various frequency synthesizers and the like. The satellite television ground system utilizes related oscillators for the uplink and downlink sections. Carrier frequency offset in the downlink is measured in a carrier tracking loop part of a television signal demodulator. The carrier frequency offset of the downlink is utilized to synthesize various frequency signals for the uplink and downlink sections to correct frequency errors. For the uplink section, the carrier frequency offset of the downlink is reversed in the uplink. If the uplink is on a different frequency, the measured offset of the system master oscillator can be scaled by different synthesizer ratios.
