    • A process is provided for sorting mail pieces, especially manual mail, received at a postal processing and distribution center having associated mail delivery zones with associated postal delivery codes such as zip codes. Each delivery zone has one or more associated postal carriers which deliver mail to destination points within that zone. The delivery codes identify which zone and which carrier within the zone the mail piece should be delivered to. The process includes the steps of (a) receiving at a center mail for sorting; (b) sorting received mail that is addressed to delivery points in zones associated with that center to at least carrier level using a postal sorting machine (10) having a number of pockets (11, 12) that receive sorted mail, resulting in sorted mail for zones associated with that center organized into batches by zone and by carrier; (c) sorting out received mail that is addressed to delivery points in zones not associated with that center for delivery to other centers; and (d) forwarding the sorted mail from step (b) to respective postal delivery units at which each carrier included in the sort of step (b) receives mail for delivery. Such a process eliminates at least one manual sorting step from current USPS processes for handling manual mail.

    • The invention provides an apparatus and method for detecting overlapped mail pieces when sorting batches of flat mail pieces as the pieces are conveyed on their narrow sides, whereby the sorted mail pieces are moved successively standing on their narrow sides in a longitudinal direction along a bed or path. Positioned below the path is an electronic line camera arranged with its longitudinal axis perpendicular to the feed direction of the sorted mail pieces that scans the lower narrow edges of the mail pieces through a gap in the bed. In one aspect, two sources of light, such as light emitting diodes, are positioned laterally from the line camera diagonally illuminate the mail pieces from below as the mail pieces pass over a window in the path so that the edges of the scanned narrow sides are emphasized by shadowing. Features of the scanned images are transmitted to an evaluation means that utilizes statistical analyses and compared with models of known physical mail piece configurations determined off-line to determine the model that most agrees with the analysis of the scanned image data. In one aspect the evaluation means comprises a microprocessor that is preprogrammed to compare and statistically analyze the captured image data with reference to standard image data and determine the probability that the scanned image data represents over lapping mail pieces, in which case the microprocessor generates a signal that triggers corrective action.

    • A system is provided for the simple image capture and address recognition of mail, flats or parcels that does not require complex support or equipment and can be practiced on machinable and non-machinable mail pieces. The method described herein allows for further downstream processing of the scanned items by automated or manual mail or parcel systems. A simple OCR device can be used to read information on a piece of mail, flat or parcel using a hand held camera or fixed mounted camera. The image data is analyzed with OCR software or pattern recognition software, and a bar code label is printed representing the ZIP code or other relevant information and applied to the mail piece. A unique identification tag is printed on a label for those mail pieces captured but with no ZIP code results determined for later recall of the image and processing either on-line or off-line.

    • A method for sorting mail pieces for delivery by a carrier, wherein the mail pieces include both letters and flats, includes the steps of a) sorting in a first sorting pass a batch of letters, each letter having a destination code thereon which corresponds to one of a predetermined number of delivery destinations for a carrier delivery route, b) sorting in first sorting pass a batch of flats, each flat having a destination code thereon which corresponds to one of the predetermined number of delivery destinations for the carrier delivery route, using the same automated sorting machine which scans each delivery code and stores it in a computer memory; c) sorting in a first sorting pass a batch of dividers having a scannable code thereon; d) then sorting the letters, flats and dividers in at least one subsequent sorting pass, using the scanned and stored codes according to the computer-implemented sort scheme, resulting in a series of groups of mail pieces for each destination, which groups may include letters only, flats only, or both letters and flats, and which groups are in delivery route order, with a divider between each group.

Positioned below the path is an electronic line camera (12) arranged with its longitudinal axis perpendicular to the feed direction of the sorted mail pieces (16) that scans the lower narrow edges of the mail pieces through a gap (18) in the bed. In one aspect, two sources of light, such as light emitting diodes (26), are positioned laterally from the line camera (12) diagonally illuminate the mail pieces (16) from below as the mail pieces pass over a window (18) in the path (14) so that the edges of the scanned narrow sides are emphasized by shadowing. Features of the scanned images are transmitted to an evaluation means that utilizes statistical analyses and compared with models of known physical mail piece configurations determined off-line to determine the model that most agrees with the analysis of the scanned image data. In one aspect the evaluation means comprises a microprocessor (22) that is preprogrammed to compare and statistically analyze the captured image data with reference to standard image data and determine the probability that the scanned image data represents over lapping mail pieces, in which case the microprocessor (22) generates a signal that triggers corrective action.
